A 598 head Charolais herd owned by Great Western Land and Cattle Co. crossed the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation in New Mexico en route to summer grazing in Colorado. The long overland trail covered 192 miles with a brief stop at a highway bridge and a corral in Dulce as cowboys rested in a local bar.
City employees receive average 4.5 percent raises effective July 1 after a lengthy three and a quarter hour meeting. The payroll rises from about $23,150 to $24,175 monthly as 62 staffers are assessed individually. City manager Joe Smith gains review, with most raises below his recommended scale.
A federal court in Albuquerque scheduled a continuation of a property access injunction hearing concerning Forked Lightning Ranch owner E. E. Fogelson and Pajari to in San Miguel County defendants Frank Salmeron and Esqupula Padilla. Testimony Tuesday outlined fence damage May 7 and cattle trespass, with Salmere denying threats and asserting land rights.
Four mythical counties at New Mexico Boys State elected officers on Tuesday with state officials to be chosen today by 575 juniors attending the American Legion event. The list includes DeBaca county clerk Danny Bryant and other county posts from Albuquerque Roswell Artesia Hobbs and more, with officials such as treasurer surveyor sheriff magistrate judge and district attorney named.

Reies Lopez Tijerina and two Alianza members appeal their U S district court assault convictions from Dec 18 1967 stemming from a 1966 Carson National Forest incident. They claim their acts were peaceful and seek reversal on trial and indictment grounds citing misapplied intent and lack of federal officer coverage.
In Albuquerque a federal civil rights trial moves toward conclusion as cross examination of Alfonso Sanchez continues. Sanchez, a defendant, testifies that he told State Police Chief Joe Black that members of Reies Lopez Tijerina's Alianza in a Canjilon campground after the Tierra Amarilla courthouse raid could be arrested.
Albuquerque Farmington Santa Rosa Tucumcari and Rosewell filed protests as the State Corporation Commission weighs Mountain States Telephone Co. plan to raise rates by 7.8 million dollars annually. Dellon Coker for the Defense Department opposed the increase. Lloyd Leger, MTN States VP, outlined a 68.7 million NM expansion and expected revenue gains.
A HEW attorney advised state officials the apparent low bid for the $1.8 million Raton hospital construction would be considered valid. Tom Shinas, health facilities director for the State Health and Social Services Department, reported the guidance.
Lovington board accepted three resignations at the June meeting. Target staff leaving include Thalbert McGinnis moving to Oklahoma Linda Gutierrez moving to Clovis and Pat Henry heading to Odessa. Seven new teachers were hired to fill roles at the junior high and central sites.
Tom Embree of Lovington was elected by acclamation as deputy district governor for Lions District 40X at Raton. He will serve three years as deputy and one year as governor, with the district comprising more than 30 Lions Clubs in the state. Embree has been active in local Lions work and has served Lovington as a goodwill emissary during the meeting.
