The Lea County jury commission will reconvene at the courthouse to redraw venire lists by selecting every 20th name from polls, replacing the prior discretionary method. Critics fear random draw could reduce minority and female representation despite claims of liberal adjudication.

Voters in New Mexico select 70 delegates from 204 candidates in a statewide special election to draft a new state constitution. All voting on machines, with lines allowed to vote past 7 pm. 600 polling places expected and about 446000 eligible voters.

Two Vehicle Collision Injures Two Women

A 1969 Plymouth and a 1963 Rambler collided at County Road 97 and the damp ground road injuring two women. Mrs Cook and Mrs Todhunter were treated at Lovington General Hospital for facial lacerations and a dislocated shoulder, with extensive vehicle damage reported. Investigation continues into the cause.

Weather Outlook for Lovington and New Mexico

Partly cloudy tonight and Friday with cooler windy conditions and a chance of thunder. Showers possible with a high near 76 and a low around 58. In New Mexico showers expected to increase overnight from the north, spreading southeast by morning with cooler north and fair west Friday. Lows around the 40s north and south, highs 60s to mid 70s north and upper 70s to mid 80s south.

New Indian Officials To Be Named

Interior Secretary Walter Hickel plans to name three new officials for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Alonzo Spang of Navaho Community College would be commissioner, with Dr. Robert A. Roessel Jr. as deputy commissioner and James Hena as assistant for economic development. Senator Gordon Allott objects since all nominees are Democrats.

Civil Rights Suit Reaches Jury in New Mexico

The civil rights case against 14 New Mexico law enforcement officers, including State Police Chief Joe Black and Adjutant Gen. John Jolly, heads to the jury after final arguments.
