State welfare director backs non profit to stabilize industry

Fred Buckles outlines a plan to create a state financed non profit economic development corporation. The group would coordinate parks, recreation and development efforts, merge agencies, and possibly issue revenue bonds. Governor would appoint a board with staggered terms to ensure continuity, aiming for a $300 million three year program and reappraisal tied state funding.

SAWCD Supervisors Election Announced

Don Burton and Harve were elected as district supervisors for three year terms to the Animas Valley Soil and Water Conservation District Board. Curtis Roark announced the other list of current supervisors and that both districts plan a regional Resource Conservation and Development Project meeting in Silver City October 9 with Duckum and Conners as delegates.

Juarez Race Track Opens Season With Wide Stakes Menu

Juarez Race Track starts its third season at 1 p.m. Saturday with a 10 day race schedule through Oct. 29 featuring 12 races daily including minimum three quarter horse events and a mixed 870 yard race. Highlights include the 4000 Inaugural Handicap on opening day, 3000 Joe Blair Allowance, 50000 Juarez Chamizal Futurity, 20900 Double Derby for quarter horses, and 7500 added Juarez Gold Cup.

Bloodhound to Aid Silver City Area Lost Persons Search

A year old pedigree bloodhound purchased by Guy Johannes will assist Western New Mexico University Outdoor Association search and rescue in Grant County. The dog joins a unit led by Kent Thomas with sheriff and campus police cooperation to locate missing people in the Gila Forest around Silver City.

Lordsburg Mavericks Triumph In First Conference Game

The Lordsburg Mavericks defeated the Corrizoro Grizzlies 20 to 0 on the home field. All touchdowns came after Grizzlies fumbles, with Mario Ramirez, Ruben Baisa, Paul Speer, Doyar May, and Andy Gonzales scoring or aiding scores. The Mavericks showcase a strong passing attack and solid defense. They travel to Bayard Cobre for a 4:00 p.m. inter conference game against the Class A Indians.

Gallegos Sentenced On Burglary Charge

Juan Gallegos was sentenced to one to five years in state prison after pleading guilty to burglary of the Circle H Grocery. Lester Garlick, previously jailed for being an accessory to armed robbery at the Bivens Motel, has a new trial granted and will be tried today.

Air Force Airman Receives Commendation Medal

S/Sgt. Angel McDonald son of Mr and Mrs J T McDonald of 100 East Short St earned the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service as an electrical power production technician with the 6924th Security Squadron Da Nang AB Republic of Vietnam. McDonald, a 1960 graduate of LH S, is stationed at Beale AFB California. His wife Ginger is the daughter of Mrs Maria Esquibel of Lordsburg.
