American Legion Auxiliary Fall Conference Planned

District No. Seven American Legion and Auxiliary host a full day on October 7 at the American Legion Hall. Local Naval Officer Awarded Bronze Star

Lieutenant Samuel Ernest Bishop of the U S Navy received the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement with River Section 542 in Vietnam. Adm Roy L Johnson lauded his leadership and tactics after a mine sweeper was damaged and attacked, guiding his boats to aid and cover for safe maneuvering. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Harold Bishop of Lordsburg.

Maverick Booster Club Set Meeting For October 11

The Lordsburg Maverick Booster Club will gather at El Charro Restaurant on Wednesday October 11 at 7 p.m. Coaches and fathers will share supper watch a football film and receive a scouting report on the Homecoming game against Duncan. Orange hats with Maverick insignia will be available soon.

Mavericks Bow To Cobre in Bayard Battle

Lordsburg Mavericks suffered a 39-0 loss to Class A power Cobre Indians in Bayard last Friday night. Cobre led at every phase, while Lordsburg also faced a strong air and ground game and tough defense. The team heads to Tularosa to meet the Wildcats in conference action. The Head Hunters Society honors defenders with 300 points for tackles, interceptions, fumbles, and shutouts, with three sponsors: Andy Gonzales, David Richardson, and Ramon Nava. Mario Ramirez, a safety, sustained a broken nose.

Governor David Cargo proclaims Fire Prevention Week starting October 8 and EDITH Day on October 11 in Lordsburg. Fire Marshal Charles Walter urges every family to rehearse home escape plans with two ways out of each room and to perform a coordinated drill at 8 p.m. on October 11.

Protests Over Golden State Route Discontinuance

New Mexico State Corporation Commission filed a complaint with the Interstate Commerce Commission against the discontinuance of passenger service by Southern Pacific and Rock Island on the Golden State Route El Paso to Chicago. The SCC argues the Golden State Limited and Sunset Limited are profitable and that discontinuance harms communities Tucumcari Santa Rosa Carrizozo Tularosa and Alamogordo while risking mail and express revenue exceeding two million dollars yearly.

Two Men Arrested on Narcotic Charges

City county and state officers arrested Fred Carillo Florez 29 and Frank Ybarra Rodriguez 26 last Saturday afternoon two miles west of town on Interstate 10. Florez faces DWI reckless driving and possession of narcotics. Rodriguez is charged with aiding and abetting a DWI and possession of narcotics. Bond set at 5000 each for narcotics charges and 100 each for lesser charges. Both jailed in lieu of bond.
