Hidalgo County 4 H entries dominated the County Fair with grand champions in fat barrow fat lamb and heavy weight classes. Nell DeVilbiss earned grand 4 H fat barrow while Martha Nell DeVilbiss claimed 4 H fat lamb and Jimmy Mene won 4 H fat barrow in another division with star stock.
Parents in Meeting of the Lordsburg Parents discuss fifth grade beginners band during a Sept. 17 gathering. The regular executive board is listed with Mrs Richards as president and Mrs Bishop as vice president. committee members include various organizers and supporters. Continued on Page 5.
District Governor Thomas P. Foy of Lions International spoke at the Landsburg Lic Club session held at Hotel Hidalgo. Foy, district attorney in Silver City, outlined duties of district governors and urged stronger member recruitment and attendance. Lordsburg Lions Club sponsors March of Dimes and supports Christmas Kiddies Party and other projects.
Two ditch lining demonstrations were held in the county this week. The Animas Valley SCD showcased at the Roy Hatch farm in Cotton City featuring a 15 inch deep ditch with one foot bottom and 1 to 1 side slopes. The Virden Valley SCD demonstration at the Mortensen farm described a 21% inch deep ditch with similar slope and bottom. The program offers up to 10 per cubic yard of concrete and urges contacting the local SCS office for details.
Entertainment features kick off the Hidalgo County Fair with a Lordsburg High School band concert directed by Roger Brandt. Sherry Hudgens and Linda Kynaston perform a tap routine. Street dancing, Pug Scott and Arizona Ramblers, draws large crowds Friday and Saturday. Certificates for best Western Dress go to Johnny Fry and Wanda Wilder. Roy Hatch wins a Stetson hat for the longest beard. Walter Ray gets a Caxton hat for the most artistic beard.
The Hidalgo County Fair featured the Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo as a successful event both as entertainment and financially. Out of state contestants arrived from Texas Oklahoma and Arizona. Winners included Calf roping Fred Darnell 20.6 seconds bare back bronc Blacky Rutherford 371 saddle bronc Arnold Jones 341 bull riding Arnold Jones 383 team tying Clyde Allred Joe Glenn 32.4 seconds barrel races Gayle Busselle 17.1 seconds 18.6 average.
Edgar Cureton owner of Cow Canyon ranch near Lordsburg is listed in critical condition at Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso after illness.
Commander Henry Brown of Bataan Post No 3099 invites the public to a VFW meeting at the Elks Club at 7 30 tonight. Plans to organize a Ground Observer Corps unit in Lordsburg will be discussed with Air Corps representatives present to explain the GOC functions.
The Lordsburg Mavericks edged the Hatch Bears 19 to 12 in a hard fought conference opener. Jim Williams scored twice including a 75 yard run after halftime, with a failed extra point keeping the score tight at 6-0.
Hidalgo County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis reports a $7300 gift to aid local polio patients. Chairman Harber Heather notes funds cover costly care for three current cases and emphasize the march toward polio control through vaccination while ensuring care remains available.
The Hidalgo County Old Timers banquet drew 83 attendees at the American Legion hall on Thursday night. Seventy three members and 10 guests heard remarks from R B Ownby and District Judge A W Marshall while Thomas P Frey spoke on pioneer heritage.
A two car crash at the junction of Highway 70 80 and State Highway 121 in Las Cruces early Sunday killed Dr Homer H Conder a prominent optometrist and Deming businessman. His wife Hazel and her mother Mrs Rutherford were hospitalized with multiple injuries. Funeral services for Dr Conder were held at the Presbyterian Church in Deming with his sons Delford and Wilfred of Humboldt Iowa present.
