Fair winners announced at the New Mexico State Fair include blue ribbon recipients Jane Kerr in clothing Delores Burrola in home living and Patricia Plowman for healthy and happy poster awards from Hidalgo County 4-H competition this week.
Lordsburg faced a surge of burglaries from June 22 to September 2 1977 causing over 14000 in damages and more than 13430 in property loss. Police and sheriff deputies logged extra hours to curb the trend and identify suspects. Insurance covered some losses but most were unpaid. The incidents targeted E J Short Oil Co Old Hollow Bar Heather Mortuary Joe Bivens Home Civic Center U S Post Office City Hall Coronado Theatre Ely s Mercantile Central Bar.
Governor Apodaca announces Know Your Courts Week. Hidalgo County District Court hosts public visitors day on Tuesday September 27 with a real trial in progress. Judge Hodges and Judge Hughes lead tours, jury selection demo, and explanations of court procedures during 9 am to noon and 1 to 5 pm hours.
A replica of the Spirit of St Louis flown by Verne Jobst landed at Lordsburg Airport on September 17 during a 107 city cross country tour commemorating Lindbergh's 1927 flight. The crew, greeted warmly, continued to Deming for fuel with a chase plane.
In Lordsburg New Mexico a crow named Sherlock regularly accompanies the Ben Dunlap family children to multiple schools each week. Sherlock does not speak English, uses no books, and does not take time from teachers. He enjoys lunches and posing for photos, and is kept as a family pet and friend.
The Hidalgo County Court House will gain a three story addition including an elevator to serve handicapped persons. The EDA grant totals 146000 with the county funding 54000 for completion. Construction is planned to start in December with new offices restrooms conference room and commissioners offices.
A Democratic meeting is set for Tuesday October 18 at 7 30 pm in the Hidalgo County Courthouse to elect Ward and Precinct officials and County Central Committee members. The County Central Committee will meet October 25 at 7 30 pm in the Courthouse to elect party county officials and a State Central Committee member.
