The Liberal regrets that all photos from last weekend's Hidalgo County Fair cannot appear this week. The plan is to publish as many images as possible in upcoming issues over the next weeks.
Dan Rathbun of the Bureau of Land Management in Las Cruces proposes another meeting with Hidalgo County residents to answer questions from the August 10 Lordsburg hearing. He notes grazing allotments are not his to decide and cites changes to the Planning Program including water-tank fencing. He aims to attend a Liberal city council meeting and host further discussions in October in Lordsburg.
Lordsburg city officers kept a busy week ending September 12 with nine false alarms, seven burglary complaints, two vandalism reports, one aggravated assault, two non injury crashes and one personal injury crash. The department also handled six bar calls, 26 public assistance calls and six arrests.
Lordsburg Municipal Board of Education approved four new teachers Robert Diaz Marilyn Ford George Rodriguez and Cris Clawson at a Monday meeting September 13. Jody Breitling resigned effective August 5.
Western New Mexico University invites applications for its Upward Bound program for 1977-78. Deadline is announced and representatives will visit Silver City Bayard Lordsburg and Deming high schools to explain benefits of the 18 week program. Sixty students will be selected by academic potential and income level. The program starts October 15 with activities in academics counseling and recreation.
The annual Fair stock sale held Saturday Sept 10 raised over $22,000 for young sellers. Grand Champion Steer Jay Peterson El Charro Restaurant bought for $2962.50. Grand Champion Barrow Trent Mortensen sold to First National Bank for $95200. Grand Champion Lamb James Turner bought by Frank Hood El Charro for $517.75. Numerous other high bids include Betsy Peterson First National Bank $2566.60 and Jeff Mortenson $483.00. Rusty Umphres led with four first place ribbons among multiple champions.
