Observers near Kitt Peak National Observatory reported a green atmospheric phenomenon last Saturday. Officials noted it was a natural solar atmospheric event caused by a burn meteor and stratospheric ice crystals.
Gila National Forest and 11 other in Arizona and New Mexico review roadless areas in a second inventory. The total inventoried land may drop about 1,963 acres from 1973 totals, with some new acreage added. Construction of a fencing project along Highway 90 near Silver City to Lordsburg is planned around October.
A Lordsburg man, Alan Winslow, 26, died when his car left State Route 78 south of Clifton Arizona. Three others Teresa Ann Johnson 23 Larry Callouette 28 and Billy Wayne Moore 24 were injured and transported to a Morenci hospital. Funeral services are pending at Heather Mortuary.
Hidalgo County relies on government transfers for about 14 percent of local income with retirement and disability benefits making up nearly 59 percent of payments. Public assistance and unemployment insurance contribute 16 and 6 percent respectively, while statewide transfer totals rose 377 percent since 1965.
W J Chen formerly head of the Hidalgo Smelter Technical Services Department has been promoted to Assistant Smelter Superintendent effective October 1 1977. R L Winslow will replace Chen as Technical Services Department Head. Winslow, a 1973 Drexel College graduate in Chemical Engineering, joined Hidalgo Smelter in 1975 and has worked on computer implementation.
