The Hidalgo County Rodeo during the Diamond Jubilee saw Arizona cowboys win major honors across events. Joe Sublett of Tucson won first in Bull Riding, while also leading in Bare Back riding with Bill Griffith second. Claude E. Embrey a longtime Lordsburg jeweler died Friday September 16 at a Silver City hospital. Born December 4 1903 in Martwick Kentucky he moved to Lordsburg in 1937 and owned Embrey Jewelry Store since 1941. Funeral at Heather Chapel with Rev. Robert Harvey. interment Mountain View Cemetery. Free String Instrument Instruction At Lordsburg High
Lordsburg Schools offer free violin cello and string bass lessons to fourth through eleventh graders. An organizational meeting is set for Monday Sept 26 at 4 00 pm in the high school band room. The district owns 12 violins 2 cellos and 1 string bass for use with instruction led by Roger Brandt.

Mavericks Fall to Clifton On Muddy Night
The Lordsburg Mavericks lost to Clifton last Friday as Earl Randolph 6 ft 4 in 220 lb fullback powered the Clifton offense. Randolph blocked a punt in the first quarter and set Clifton up on the Maverick 10 yard line.

Yucca Motel Held Up in Lordsburg Robbery
Two men robbed the Yucca Motel in the west part of Lordsburg around 1 30 Friday morning taking 122 dollars. Manager Mr Sowel was tied gagged but woke his wife who helped summon police. Suspects described as one tall pale man in gray and one slender dark man in dark clothes fled in a black car toward Road Forks.

Hidalgo County Fair A Pronounced Success
The fifth Hidalgo County Fair opened after the Old Timer's Parade with broad exhibit participation. Johnny Browning won grand champion fat calf, Claude Martin took reserve calf, Mary Edith Cureton placed third calf, and Jimmy Morris claimed grand champion lamb. Buddy Ricen led a 92 pound heavyweight lamb, with further placings to Eddie Hitson and Butch Pascal. The DeVilbiss family from Animas earned three hog prizes.
