Freeburg son of Sup nmi of Schools and Mrs Freeburg returns from Delft Holland after studying architecture on an exchange scholarship. He attended Baylor in Waco for his freshman year and spent his second and third years at Oklahoma A and M Stillwater then a fourth year at Delft. He will return to Oklahoma A and M to complete a five and a half year program.
A two hour downpour in Chihuahua Mexico on Tuesday night September 13 killed a woman and a child when a house collapsed and another boy drowned in the city plaza. Floodwaters reached the cathedral area and swept a traveling circus facility into a river while cornices toppled from buildings and debris drifted through Main Street. Damaging droughts had left many rivers dry in the region.
Hidalgo county chairman Harber Heather says no house to house drive will occur and all fund contacts end. Donations to Polio fund should be mailed to Lordsburg New Mexico then sent to state and national headquarters.
Lordsburg residents back a new high school lunch room serving nutritious meals at 25 cents funded by government free food. The opening day drew 300 plus in a rush, with crates of peaches applesauce pears honey peanut butter tomato paste and fresh produce donated by local farmers and community volunteers.
Attorney H Vearle Payne donated 20 dollars to Hidalgo Hospital for a cooler installed in the surgery room as a gift from Mr and Mrs Richard Rice. Rev Miller H Stroup of the Methodist church provided a radio for patient enjoyment.
Three applications for membership in the Lordsburg Lions club were approved at the Tuesday meeting on Sept. 20. The new members are Rev. M. H. Stroup pastor of Lordsburg Methodist church Gerald Malott and Paul Malott co publishers of The Lordsburg Liberal. Induction is set for Tuesday Sept. 27. The club voted to donate its air cooler to the Lordsburg hospital. Rev E Lawson conducting revival meetings at the Baptist church spoke briefly and shared humorous stories.
The P T A holds its first meeting of the 1949 50 season tonight at 8:00 in the high school. Mrs H H Bryant urges all members to attend for discussion of the new school cafeteria and upcoming association activities.
Bennie Cochran and Dudley Robertson captured prizes in the Ft Bayard golf tournament held Sunday.
Mrs. S. E. Allen owner of the Coronado and Palace theaters returned home Sunday from Los Angeles where she attended the Theater Owners of America national convention. The convention was held at the site indicated on the page.
Mrs. Pearl V. Huber of 1002 East 2nd Street is home after a serious operation in Tucson last week. Dr. Paul H. Bennett and his son James performed the surgery. The procedure caused partial paralysis on her right cheek and she will be observed for six months. Dr. Bennett plans to publish the case in the American Medical Journal. Dr. Behmlander is providing care and penicillin injections.
The local recruiting station will operate only on Thursdays during a 30 day furlough of S Sgt Henry A Stillwell. T Sgt Howard A Rasmussen of Deming will assume Stillwell's duties while he is away.
The Mavericks open their home football schedule on Friday night with Thatcher visiting the local gridiron. The Sept. 30 game pits Thatcher against the Mavericks in a bout to start the season strong.
Hidalgo county voters participated lightly in the Constitutional Amendment special election. Results show varied support across ten amendments with multiple counts such as amendment 3 at 163 yes to 47 no and amendment 9 at 952 yes to 150 no, among others.
About 75 members and guests of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its auxiliary attended a get together supper Tuesday evening in the National Guard armory. The auxiliary served the meal with Mrs. George Eddy as committee chair, aided by Mrs. Charles Walter and Mrs. Roy Jones. The next auxiliary meeting is set for Tuesday evening October 18 at the armory.
Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Baxter attended the state convention of the New Mexico Osteopathic Association of Physicians and Surgeons in Santa Fe. The meeting was at the La Fonda hotel and Mrs. Baxter was elected parliamentarian for the auxiliary.
Mrs J A Foster is reelected president of the Lordsburg Woman's Club. The September 19 gathering at The Westerner Cafe included 45 members and guests, with rainbow dahlias and bowls of flowers. New constitution and by laws were adopted. L A Burns spoke as district president.
The Lordsburg B football team hosts the Las Cruces B squad Saturday at 3:00 p m at Lordsburg field. Cruces beat Deming B 18 0 last Saturday. Lordsburg Bs open their season and are expected to perform well with a small admission fee.
The Robert Shaw Post No. 30 American Legion sponsors a public dance at the Legion hall on Saturday evening Sept 24. The Coronadians will provide the music and the public is invited.
