Mavericks Open 1949 Football Season Friday Night

The Mavericks host Thatcher on Friday September 30 in their first home game of the 1949 season. H C Linquist has not named the starting lineup but top performers are expected on both offense and defense. Thatcher enters as a strong Arizona team after a 26 0 loss to Safford and a 15 12 win over Duncan. Lordsburg faces Ba laddie Mulleanux a 196 pound athlete noted for passing running and kicking.

Lions Speakers Myra Kerr and Isabelle Wright Featured

Myra Kerr and Isabelle Wright will be special guests at a Lions lab luncheon and meeting at a Westerner cafe Tuesday. Sponsored by the American Legion auxiliary, they spoke at Girls State held last week in Las Cruces on mental and social aspects of the state.

Garden Club Meeting In Lordsburg Set For October 4

Lordsburg’s new Garden Club will meet Tuesday night at 7 00 pm in the home of Mrs Percy Brown. Members will hear the organization report and by laws committee, and decide questions on club aims and plant campaigns for the local climate.

The Pythian Sisters of the Grand Jurisdiction of New Mexico held their 27th annual convention in Belen on September 19 and 20 with the Belen Sisters Knights as hosts. Grand Chancellor Harry Auge and Grand Chief Florence Scott gave an open house on September 18. officers were elected on Tuesday morning, naming Mrs. Odie Haltom as Grand Chief.

The 1949 50 District IV high school basketball tournament will be hosted by New Mexico State Teachers College in the Mus tang field house on February 23 24 and 25 1950. Teen Dance After Lordsburg Thatcher Game

The American Legion sponsors a teen-age dance Friday night after the Lordsburg vs Thatcher football game. Admission is 25 cents per person. Music by the High School orchestra and adequate chaperonage will be provided.

Patsy Batts Installed as Worthy Advisor for Rainbow for Girls

Assembly Number 17 of the Rainbow for Girls installed officers for 1949. Patsy Batts was installed as Worthy Advisor with Jackie Turrentine as associate advisor and a slate including Pat Cory, Anna Martin, Margaret Richards and Patricia Flickinger. Installing officers included Marise Coursey and Barbara Parker among others with Harriet Wilson and Shirley Evans as observers. Vistors attended and refreshments followed.

VFW Publishing Hidalgo County Service Record

The Service Record Book of Hidalgo county prepared for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3099 is at the printers and will be sold soon. It honors those who died in World War I with material by James Kike ma and assistance from Mrs. John T. Muir and Robert Castle. Additional contributors include Mrs. Luella Clark and several local historians.

Old Timers Association To Organize Oct 15

Hidalgo County Old Timers plans a chapter meeting on Saturday Oct 15 at 7 00 pm in the American Legion hall. 108 residents eligible by 40 years state residence may join and vote for a president secretary and a board for the coming year. A dinner, an old time fiddle contest and a dance will follow with a registration urged by the Chamber of Commerce.

The Anthony Country Club invites Lordsburg Golf Club members and district golfers to a three day event in Anthony from October 6 to 9. Qualifying rounds October 6, tournament play October 7. Entry fee is 7.50 dollars including meals. All golfers invited.
