The Hidalgo County Association for Handicapped Citizens will hold a regular meeting at the Yucca Center on Tuesday September 26 at 7 30 p m All members prospective members and parents are urged to attend The new program director will be present and will introduce the new program.
Lordsburg's city fathers will hire a Santa Fe law firm to determine the exact ordinances on the books. In a special session Monday afternoon, the council approved Mayor Alan A. Koff to dicker with the firm for services to codify and clarify the city's ordinances.
The council heard a report on codifying city ordinances at an estimated cost of 7500 dollars. Sutin Thayer and Brown will review about 220 ordinances, removing duplicates and outdated laws and providing a current listing with no readoption needed. The council approved the motion unanimously.
Two Sixth District officials were named to the perjury trial of State Sen. Emilio Naranjo. Judge Ray Hughes will preside, and District Attorney J. C. Robinson will co prosecute with Albuquerque attorney Greg Worley. Anaya announced Robinsons appointment as special prosecutor had earlier been announced. Indictments allege five counts of perjury against Naranjo, a former Rio Arriba Sheriff, and two former deputies. The deputy defendants Anthony Griego and Ruben Vigil face trial in early dates.
The Lordsburg First Offender Program, funded by city Hidalgo County and New Mexico health and environment officials, aims to divert first time juvenile offenders. Led by Maura Rico, it features seven weekly seminars and small group sessions to teach conflict resolution and family skills, with training offered by counselors from regionally nearby towns. Interested volunteers may call Ms Maura Rico at 9597.
Lordsburg School System urges fans not to bring alcohol to home games. New Mexico Activities Association rules prohibit alcohol at sanctioned school events. A uniformed officer will patrol Friday night’s game vs Silver City to enforce the rule.
A single vehicle crash occurred on a highway near the U S Border Patrol Office. One occupant was thrown into the windshield with minor facial and head injuries, while another appeared uninjured and attempted to flee but was detained by Border Patrol until local police and county deputies arrived.
Hillcrest General Hospital trustees discussed 43592 dollars in bad debts from Hidalgo County patients written off in an 18 month review. The board plans further study to separate indigent care costs for presenting to Hidalgo County, and considers a new data processing system to improve debt collection. Regular patients are treated across Deming, Silver City, and Tucson while Hidalgo General remains closed.
Lordsburg and Animas districts report higher pay for returning teachers with Lordsburg averaging 11.6 percent raise to 13 330 dollars and Animas 10.8 percent to 12 936 dollars. Daily rates rise to 74 and 71 dollars respectively with benefits up 301 and 383 dollars. Total staff count edges up at Lordsburg to 91.0 and Animas to 57.9 as state wide averages show a 10.4 percent rise to 14 198 dollars.
