The annual Punt Pass and Kick contest sponsored by Smith Ford takes place this Saturday at 10 a.m. in Lordsburg High School Stadium marking the 15th season. Local winners advance to higher levels. sign ups are at the Smith Ford dealership through Friday with no charge and hot dogs and Cokes afterward.
A 475-name petition seeks a special Lordsburg City Council meeting to debate the Senior Citizens program. The group, federally funded, faces eviction from the Cultural Center after Oct 1 as the city weighs options including a 15 year lease at $1 per year and city upgrades.
A high speed pursuit from Lordsburg to Willcox, Arizona, led to the arrest of two Bridge City, Texas youths aged 14 and 15. Law enforcement, including Hidalgo County deputies and New Mexico State Police, pursued a stolen car on I-10, with a roadblock near San Simon and a final stop just outside Willcox. Minor damage to a state police unit occurred. no injuries.
Hidalgo County Democrats failed to convene state convention delegates last week due to an absent chairman. Albuquerque party officials say the local Democrats can still meet to elect delegates if they publicize a September plan. Vice chair Maura Rico would succeed Leroy McCarty upon resignation, though his status remains unclear.
The Lordsburg Chapter of AARP was granted its charter on Monday September 25 at the Civic Center. State Director Robert Baldino from Rio Rancho and Assistant State Director Ester Tunks of Deming attended. The group, formed in 1975 with Orin Barney as president, now meets charter requirements. Alice Martin, the local president, was praised as the charter plaque was presented. Baldino noted AARP’s 50 000 New Mexico members and the community voice of retirees.

Increased patrols, school radar zones, and city-wide enforcement aim to curb transients and vandalism while exploring NCIC terminal, foot patrols, and quarterly pistol qualifications. Hall seeks more manpower, enhanced training, and potential NCIC access, with cooperation from state and border agencies boosting patrol effectiveness.
