Smith Appointed Mayor in Lordsburg Unanimous Vote
Lordsburg City Council named Arthur Clark Smith the next mayor at a regular meeting on Wednesday September 9. Mayor Stephen D. Hill announced his resignation effective September 30 1987 citing a job transfer to Silver City with Texas New Mexico Power Company. Hill said resigning now better serves the city than completing the six month nonresident mayor grace period.

Lordsburg Welcomes Western Skies Motel Expansion
Lordsburg opens its new Western Skies Motel a 40 unit Best Western facility costing over a million dollars. Gen Con Construction of Las Cruces built it under D Howser supervision for Ventures Partners of Las Cruces. The motel offers two queen beds per room a five foot pool coin wash dry cable TV smoking and non smoking rooms and direct dial phones. It will employ about 18 locals.

Edna Tyler Lee 87 of Cotton City died in Dallas on September 8. Funeral held at Baca's Heather Funeral Chapel with Rev. Floyd Ritchie officiating and burial at Valley View Cemetery Cotton City NM. She was born December 22 1899 in Dale Texas. Surviving brother and sister live in Las Cruces Animas with several nieces and nephews. Raymond Walter Tyler 82 of Cotton City died September 10 in Lubbock. Born December 6 1904 he was an retired animal farmer. Survivors include son Ray Tyler and daughter Anna Nell Hensley both of Lubbock a brother B Nell DeVilbiss of Animas five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Pallbearers listed. Honorary pallbearers named. Baca's Heather Funeral Chapels in charge.

Community fundraiser advances for re roofing the old Animas School Gym. An All You Can Eat home style supper is set for Friday October 25 from 4 to 6:15 p.m. at the school cafeteria before the football game. Donations go to Save the Old Gym at Western Bank in Playas.
