Federal grazing land in New Mexico to be auctioned

Public auction of 1120 acres of federal grazing land in southwestern New Mexico set for October 13. Land in Grant county two miles south of Separ will be offered under the BLM by Law of Land Management with mineral rights reserved to the United States. Auction at 10 30 am in the BLM Land Office Santa Fe Post Office and Metal Building.

Maverick Booster Club Tao Supper Nets $270

Maverick Booster Club raised approximately $270 with a taco supper at The Range Cafe. Leo Griego, president, said funds will repay filming bills from last year and buy film for this year’s games. Special thanks to Jack and Mrs. Kirby for cooperation.

Richins Re-elected Hidalgo County Farm Bureau President

Clyde Richins of Animas was re-elected president at the Hidalgo County Farm Bureau annual meeting in the Cafetorium. Offiers Norma Richins, Ed Payne, and Charles Clouse were also re-elected. Ed Mechem urged close contacts with New Mexico lawmakers and discussed the wheat referendum and bracero program.

Animas P T A Installation Ceremony Opens School Year

The Animas P T A held its first meeting of the school year on Wednesday September 2 with installation of officers. Mrs Gurdon Gauthier became president Ned Merrell was named vice president Mrs A G Ramos secretary and Mrs Don Burton treasurer. Superintendent H R Overholt welcomed the new teachers and a Talent Fund Contest provided entertainment. Home made ice cream and cookies followed.

Mrs. Culps Injured in Fall at Home

Mrs Emma Culps is hospitalized at Hidalgo General with three broken ribs after a fall at her residence Tuesday morning. The incident leaves her in care under medical supervision.

Mavericks Run Up Big Score Over Ft Grant in Overtime of Fray

Lordsburg Mavericks rout Ft Grant 54 to 6 as Allen Johnson returned a pitchout for a score late in the first quarter. Lopes and Alvarez spark several drives with Valdez on kickoff returns and Lopez scoring multiple times. The Mavericks travel to Silver City to face the Class A Colts Friday.

Miss Kirk Represents Hidalgo County At New Mexico State Fair

Eighteen year old Sandra Sharon Kirk, Hidalgo County entrant, competes for the 1964 New Mexico State Fair queen title at Albuquerque September 17 to 27. She is a sophomore at Eastern Arizona Junior College, active in 4H and FFA, and sponsored by Animas Future Farmers of America. The winner succeeds Miss Lauren Green of Las Cruces.

Campbell To Dedicate Highway In New Mexico Ceremony

Jack Campbell will dedicate New Mexico Highway 90 a new all weather route between Silver City and Truth or Consequences. The ceremony Sunday September 20 starts at noon at Iron Creek picnic grounds with regional chambers hosting coffee and a donated Pepsi Coca Cola drinks. The final 10 miles were completed last week making an all paved Black Range route. Everyone should bring a picnic lunch.

Kidnap Coffee fundraiser planned by school group

A Kidnap Coffee will be held in the Home Economics room at the high school on Saturday September 19 from 9 am to 12 noon. Coffee punch and doughnuts will also be sold downtown to benefit the business people. The funds support the ET A scholarship for a graduate in the spring.

Hail Severely Damages Cotton City Farm Crops

Extensive hail damaged about 500 acres in the Cotton City area Monday evening with 10 to 80 percent crop loss. Cotton and maize suffered heavy damage on the Bill Veck Sidney Wright and Richins Brothers farms as large hailstones struck. Hatch farm radish crop was ruined and several other farms saw extensive damage.

Redrock Resident Escapes Injury In Narrow Ditch Collapse

Ellis Wright of Redrock narrowly escaped injury when the ditch bank he was working on gave way last Monday. Several tons of gravel and sand slid into the water, knocking him across the ditch and covering him with mud and water. He was uninjured aside from being wet and shaken.
