Captain and Mrs Warren report staking their farm and note Cleo Lee resembles her father more each day. Lt Mithoff and Grizzelle attended a seven o clock dinner at Maj or and Mrs Burker’s home. Little Buddy Brown, son of Lt and Mrs Brown, shows signs of illness while Betty DeCamp walks shakily. Lts Wintringham and Taylor join Camp Hospital nursing staff as new arrivals.
Hostesses Mrs FE Quillen and Mrs Oscar Smart welcomed guests at a 10 oclock courtesy breakfast in the Officer's Club. A white and yellow theme featured tall yellow tapers and a crystal bowl with warf zinnias. The menu opened with orange juice, followed by French toast with crisp bacon marmalade scrambled eggs and coffee. Guests included Mesdames Burker Churchill Safford Balch Coffman Carp Northman DeCamp Stelle Kenny Lynch Horgan Dater Lts Burton Wintingham Linn Taylor Braden Gibbs.
Mrs. Forrest Porch, daughter of Sgt. and Mrs. L. M. Ayers, left for El Paso Monday night to work in a defence plant. Little Craig Anne Ackerman is two months old and growing steadily. Betty Ann Traylor is described as the sweetest when she cries, according to Lt. Traylor.
Mrs J H Biggers of Grand Prairie Texas visits at her daughter Mrs H Traylor in Smith Courts Lordsburg. She will stay a week or ten days and enjoys Betty Ann Traylor. Wives of enlisted personnel meet at Mrs F K Burker Seventh Street Friday at three.
The Lordsburg Womans Club hosts its annual luncheon on Monday September 20 at 1 pm at the Hidalgo Hotel. Mrs J H Amy president of the 4th District will speak. Miss Ruth Thurman Silver City schools music director will sing her compositions led by toastmistress Mrs H E Scofield.
J R Schwarz spent several days in Lordsburg this week on business activities, meeting local officials and checking on ongoing projects. The trip focused on regional commerce, with discussions on potential investments and community development.
The Lordsburg Church of Christ organized February 27 1896 with nineteen members after S K Hallam preached in Lordsburg. John A Chenowth became minister and C M Coggin clerk as the church grew rapidly from 19 to 67 by 1899. Ruth F Wood married Roy J Smith in the church on November 4 1942.
Last Thursday afternoon Mrs Pearl Scott Hardin was surprised with a stork shower given by Mrs Woodrow Shinn and Mrs Walter Clayton. Held at the home of Mrs W W Scott guests enjoyed iced punch and blue and white cake while gifts including many names were received.
Mr. and Mrs. Willis Lacy hosted a Patriotic Party for their daughter Briedell at the Womans Club last Friday evening. The hall featured red white and blue decorations and games were played. Refreshments included punch and patriotic cake for a group of young attendees and adults listed among the guests.
Dorothy Melnnis daughter of P M Melania and Cpl Elbert Hill of Pioneer Texas married Friday at 7 50 PM at the Methodist parsonage Rev F R Poage officiating Present were Mr Melinnis Mrs Mary Lee Fairly Miss Pauline Wright Miss Barbara Wright Pvt and Mrs Kart Hardin and Mrs F R Poage The couple left for Pioneer Texas to visit Hill's parents Hill has a day furlough Hill was born in Denatne and lived in Lordsburg for eleven years She attended Colorado Womans College and New Mexico State College and is active in church and clubs Now employed by the OPA in Hidalgo county court house They will reside at the McInnis residence upon returning from Texas
Mrs Basil Giles and Mrs Edith Wilson hosted a patio dinner for the Lordsburg Business and Professional Women club and guests on September 9. Talks covered club prospects and civic improvements while committees and state federation duties were outlined. Olivia Wells was chosen to represent the club at the bond committee meeting.
Mrs Alvin Parker spent last weekend in El Paso returning Sunday evening. She brought her son Augie home. He and Barbara had been at Loretta Academy in El Paso for weeks. Barbara will stay for the school year, but Augie is too young to be a regular student.
Wayne Fuller son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Fuller and Louise McDaniel daughter of Mr and Mrs A H McDaniel were married in Deming on August 16 and have kept the news quiet. They reside with Mr Fuller’s parents at the Fuller ranch. The bride is a senior in high school and will complete her course.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library board met last Tuesday with vice president Mrs Hazel Buvens presiding. Fiscal year circulation reached 7 746 and magazines 1 012. August adds included several new titles donated by Mrs Rountree. Members present were Mesdames Hazel Bavens Mathilde Johnson Berta Rountree Hazel Ewing Pearl Gauthier and Joy Heard.
Acting County Clerk Miahel Atkinson was named Hidalgo County Clerk to fill the unexpired term of Marshall Puller who left to join the Armed Forces. If Puller is discharged he may resume the civil post. Mrs Puller is named deputy. Earlier Atkinson was District Court Clerk under Judge A W Marshall.
The Delta Kappa Gamma Theta Chapter entertained many guests Saturday evening with a dance at the homes of Misses Helen Chase and Bess Johnston. Members and guests included Mrs. V. Traylor, Miss Katherine Richards, Mrs. Mary Lee Fairly, Miss Nancy Chase, Mrs. J. H. Clark, Miss Ima Fairly, Mrs. J. A. Lasalle and guests Miss Lucy Gass, Mrs. Dudley Robertson, Mrs. Burke Stiles, Mrs. Dora Kerr, Mrs. Donald Johnson, Mrs. Olivia Wella, Mrs. Helen Green, and Mrs. J. C. Matthews. A number of prizes were awarded.
Mrs John Ball and daughter Jamie Lou stayed with relatives in Lordaburg and visited LA Hall and George Wood. Mrs Robert Van Driel of Albuquerque joined on Saturday along with Mrs Bingaman forming extended family gathering with Lt Ball who teaches in El Paso schools. Lt Ball is stationed at Camp McCoy Wisconsin.
Mrs Ward from Washington and her mother Mrs Elate Kipp arrived after visiting Mrs Kipps son Ewald Kipp and family in Warren. They will visit Mr Rex Kipp and Mr John T Muir and Mrs Ward will return to Washington DC where her husband works. Mrs Kipp has been in El Paso all summer.
Mrs. Allen has been unusually fortunate in selecting her September Palace program. A notable incident is that El Paso theatres are duplicating a part of her program.
The State Supreme Court upholds the tobacco tax by a four to one vote. The levy funds relief for the aged and indigent and does not affect the general public, only tobacco users.
Lordeburg Lions and Lionesses enjoyed a gala night at the Women’s Club last night. The events occur about once a month at the call of President A. B. Rowman.
Erwin Ewan graduated from Fort Sam Houston Medical School on September 7 and returned to his Roswell station last week.
Evangelist E A Watts preaches a special sermon for men on Sunday evening September 19 titled Blood Bought Men. A cordial invitation goes to all men in the community to attend as Watts delivers his well received sermons. Crowds grow larger with each gathering and two have already accepted. Dr. Smith leads singing with strong responses in song.
The final meeting of the Third War Loan Drive sponsors was at City Hall with County Chairman C C Puller presiding. Representatives from local clubs and organizations reviewed first week sales totaling about 61 000 toward the 160 900 goal. a big dance at La Fiesta was planned for September 26 with admission waived except for two dollars in War Stamps.
W de Borg Counselor of the Swiss Legation visited Lordsburg with his party and stayed overnight. On returning to Washington he wrote the Chamber of Commerce expressing thanks and appreciation for the reception during the Western States trip.
Leo Cohen, a specialist in the Army supply department, is on a six week furlough to greet home relatives and friends. He handles measurements for shirts and footwear and has taken sizes for several local soldiers including Jackie Heather. Mrs. Cohen accompanies him and will stay to manage household matters during the stay.
A Liberal reporter visits the post office to observe two clerks at the bond booth where Edward James Franklin, eight, leaves a jar of pennies nickels and dimes. He has already bought two $25 bonds and plans a fourth, setting an example of patriotism and citizenship for other youngsters.
The USO hostess roster lists Mra A. A. Richards and Mrs. Ena Walter Friday. Mra Mary Lee Fairly Saturday. Mrs. Homer Brooks and Mrs. Virginia Lasalle Sunday and Monday. Tuesday and Thursday are closed. Wednesday features Mrs. Mattie Conner.
Mollie Payne mother of Mrs Ance Graham died in El Paso last Thursday and was buried Friday at Restlawn Cemetery. Former Hidalgo County residents the Grahams hosted her, and she was well known in the area.
Members and guests met at the residence of Weepee Hill. Attendees included Mrs H. L. Scofield Mrs Ownby Mrs F. H. Singer C. E. Fuller and Mrs G. Wyble along with Mrs Rex Chandler Hill and Crouch as guests.
After months of waiting, George P. Jeffus of Hidalgo County Draft board receives two cablegrams from his son Captain Hubert Jeffus, a prisoner in Camp No. 2 Philippines. The note says communication with war prisoners is possible and both father and wife report good spirits and health for a Japanese camp prisoner.
The Past Matron's Club met Friday at the home of Mrs. P. M. Chase. Attending members included Mrs. J. L. Augustine, Mrs. P. M. Chase, Mrs. J. H. Clark, Mrs. Hanner, Mrs. W. P. Hill, Mrs. Kerr, and Mrs. Olivia Wells.
Miss Helen Drew from the American Red Cross in St. Louis visits Lordsburg Camp and discusses relief work with Jack Heather during a Western States tour.
Mr and Mrs Ceferino Altuna travel to California to visit Arthur in the Army and Robert and Chico in the Navy. They are among the few families with three sons in the Armed Forces.
The Mimbres Valley Bank at Deming appoints Stanley Coon of Duncan as its new president, succeeding Frank R. Coon who was previously in the role.
Little Miss Patsy Crouch celebrated her sixth birthday on September 9 after school with seven guests. Games and refreshments followed, and gifts were given by attendees including Billy Short, Eddie Clark, Jane Chase, Nelda Edwards, Joyce Poindexter, Roy Hood, and Merilyn Hood, with Mrs. Scofield, Mrs. Green, and Mrs. Koff in attendance.
