Parade Chairman Foy Powell reminds the Old Timers Parade starts at 10 am Friday September 9 from the Fire Station. The procession travels north on Main Street to Railroad Avenue then east to Oscar's Liquor Store.
Hidalgo County Commissioners held a special meeting on September 6 to discuss Sheriff Rudy Lara and his officers assisting Lordsburg City Police at night to curb burglaries and vandalism. Sheriff Lara said he could arrange coverage with his four Lordsburg deputies if needed, and Mayor Ted White supported help. Chairman Jerry Veck urged Lara to coordinate with City Police Chief Bob Hall to implement aid until the problem subsides.
Hidalgo County Fair launches Thursday in Lordsburg with events including an Old Timers Parade mock bank robbery and hanging livestock judging horse show and rodeo. The schedule lists entries judging exhibits livestock shows and various contests from Sept 8 to 10 with gate admission one dollar for adults and free for under six.
Lordsburg officials heard State Highway Department representatives explain a new logo sign system to replace many I‑10 signs. The council voted to survey use of the system and approves a joint powers agreement with Hidalgo County for golf course maintenance funded at 1000 dollars monthly by the county and 1000 dollars in kind services by the city.
Billy Edward Turner, 24, of Lordsburg, was arraigned in the Rosa Lina Salinas magistrate Court on four burglary charges. He faces $5000 bond and additional counts tied to break ins at Ely's General Merchandise, Lordsburg City Hall, Fashion Cleaners, the Jack Morgan Agency, and a residence where firearms were stolen. Several incidents date from 1975, and police anticipate more arrests as investigations continue.
A VisionQuest wagon train from Tombstone Arizona travels through Lordsburg Hidalgo County on its way to Colorado Springs Colorado. The program for emotionally and behaviorally disordered youths uses the trip to provide real world learning and citizenship lessons while a school on wheels accompanies the group.
