Thomas outlines proper making of preserves marmalades and jellies for the County Fair exhibits. He explains marmalades using large fruit and citrus with transparent jelly like texture while preserves stay chunky. Conserves resemble thick fruit pulp spread and fruit butters form tender sparkling pastes.
Joseph's annual parish fair takes place Saturday and Sunday September 13 14 at Mocte Hall. Food will be served bingo and dancing follow queen ceremonies with Dominguez orchestra. Proceeds go to the new church.
The Lordsburg High School hosts the first PTA meeting of the 1958-59 year with a preceding board session. President Mrs. T. M. Hansen announces committees for hospitality membership publicity and other tasks while Wesley Freeburg introduces teachers.
Dan Caillouette Jr was arrested and charged with larceny for unlawfully killing a Diamond A ranch steer. Hidalgo County officers traced him to Willcox then Lordsburg where he pleaded guilty and is jailed on a 5000 dollar bond awaiting district court action.
A S and W Green Stamp premier truck will be in Lordsburg attracting shoppers and stamp collectors. Local officials expect crowds as the promotional visit promotes the program and stamps available.
District Commander John J. Nemec and Maggie Dominguez will visit Lordsburg on Thursday, September 18 at 7 30 p m at El Charro Cafe to recruit eligible disabled veterans for a new DAV chapter. The group aims to organize local members and address veterans and family concerns.
In Hidalgo County a one car wreck near Cotton City killed Mary Evelyn Medlin and her 19 month old daughter Charlotte Elizabeth. The Ford driven by B R Medlin struck a cattleguard, demolishing the car. Medlin survived in shock.
Ivan Dodson was elected president of the Young Adult Fellowship of the First Methodist Church at a recent meeting and steak social on the Annex lawn. Officers include Fred Davenport port as vice president and Frank Ohrtman as secretary treasurer. Attendees listed include Phillip Knox, James Arthur Knox, Robert Lee Eaves and family, Rev Arthur Shaw and family, Candace Kayla Corrine, and others. The next social is Oct 3 and Sunday services feature Mrs. Arthur Shaw teaching the class.
The Mavericks fall to the Weston Colts top heavy score in Silver City last Friday night. The Colts led through three quarters and stalled in the final period. Rivera passed 12 of 13 with strong backfield work by Davida and Steve Rivera and solid line play from Tibbs and Harvell.
Over the weekend two business break-ins occurred in Furgy. Mabe Drive-In was entered by breaking a west side window. 18 to 20 cigarette cartons, cigars, and juke box cash were stolen, with food scattered, suggesting amateurs. OK Rubber Welders also broken into Saturday night through a back door. drawers ransacked but only about one dollar in pennies taken. This marks multiple recent burglaries at both locations.

Attendance expected as Old Timers Parade starts the Hidalgo County Fair at 9 30 Friday morning Sept 19 with fair grounds opening after the parade. Events include Elks junior call sale 2 p m and Sheriff's Posse Rodeo at 7 30 p m with shows 2 30 and 7 30 p m Saturday and 2 30 p m Sunday.
Postmaster Eugene Montague says a cache has been purchased for the Overland Mail Centennial Caravan arrival in Lordsburg on October 1. Mail from Tipton Missouri to San Francisco will be back stamped in San Francisco. A four cent Centennial stamp will be issued and centennial envelopes are encouraged for keepsakes and collectors.
Mrs Viola Mae Palmer announced yesterday her resignation as Hidalgo County Hospital superintendent effective October 1. She said she would return to Albuquerque.
