The Annual Hidalgo County Fair opens Thursday at 10:00 a.m. for entries and ends with the Junior Rodeo at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is 1.00 for adults, 0.50 for ages 6 to 12, and free for under 6. Tickets are valid all day. The Hidalgo County All-Breed Horse Show runs Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The notice outlines a three day fair program from Thursday September 9 through Saturday September 11. Exhibits judged and livestock brought in on Thursday, parades pet shows and junior rodeo Friday, with livestock sale and horse show Saturday. Gates open and admission fees listed with times for judging, display of exhibits, and closing procedures.
Late Tuesday morning four Army helicopters diverted from Fort Hood to Fort Irwin and landed at Lordsburg Airport after a hydraulic line leak was detected. They requested emergency handling and were met by City Fire Department and Hidalgo EMS. The aircraft remained grounded pending replacement parts.
Members of the class of 1972 gathered from California Texas Arizona and Nevada for a two day reunion. Activities included a football game at Lordsburg, a cocktail party at La Fiesta, and a banquet and dance. Debbie Welsh won travel distance honors traveling from Los Angeles.
Hidalgo School Board opened with concerns over a short start to the year as Manuel Saucedo pressed Dr. Price on why the opening weeks yield only two and three days. Price suggested calendar rearrangements while preserving the end date, noting not all breaks affect Christmas. Enrollment history and budget notes followed, with approval to hire Betty Higgins Patterson as coordinator for one day weekly and a review of vocational classes.
Local Crimestoppers will meet on Wednesday September 15 at 7 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce Office. Bob Allred president says the public is invited to attend.
A Girl Scout Open House will be held at Central Elementary School on Thursday starting at 7 p.m. Parents of girls from Brownies to Senior Scout level are invited to attend and consider enrolling. Adults are needed as leaders, assistants, and committee members.
The City Council schedules its regular meeting for September on Wednesday September 15 at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at 206 South Main Street.
Hidalgo County Commission heard renewed disputes over forest service permits for cutting wood and Christmas trees. Commissioner Jack Morgan blamed travel to Silver City and called for permits issued in Lordsburg, while Forest Service officials cited bonding rules and cost controls. The board noted northern Gila Forest wood is plentiful but southern areas are stretched. Rodeo community building plans were discussed with budget constraints. a detailed proposal is requested for future funding. Continued on Page 2.
