Phelps Dodge Reopens Morenci Concentrator for Three Weeks
Phelps Dodge Corp will restart part of its Morenci concentrator on August 30. About 47 laid-off Morenci workers will return to a five day week for three weeks to produce copper concentrates using slag and flotation. Concentrates will be smelted at Douglas or Hidalgo plants. The move is not a sign of immediate large-scale resumption of operations.

Foy Wins Election In Hidalgo County District 39 Race
Thomas Foy of Silver City leads in Hidalgo County with 1,130 votes to Mauro Rico's 441 after unofficial totals. In Lordsburg Rico tops Foy 196 to 177 and outside town Foy gains 114 to 28. County turnout sits at 23 percent among 2,258 Democrats with 532 voting. Republicans abstained from contest.

Local EMS trainees practice on scene extraction drill
Emergency Medical Service trainees battled heat and pollen in a simulated on scene extraction lesson at Hidalgo Wrecking Service. The 81 hour program ends with a final exam on September 7. Trainees used hand tools and the Jaws of Life to remove victims from damaged vehicles, cutting times from 37 minutes to under 10. Instructors included Don McNutt. Final cleanup crews ready for Hidalgo County Fair
