Hidalgo County OnA Successful Fair Thanks to All Participants

Hidalgo County reports a successful county fair with strong attendance and diverse exhibits. Organizers credit volunteers, sponsors, and participants for a smooth event and thank the community for support and constructive feedback.

Claude Speer Heads 1984 County Parade

Forty three entries participated in the 1984 Fair Cowboy Heaven Parade in three divisions. Senior winners were Sunshine Haven first, Beta Sigma Phi second, Lordsburg Senior Citizens third. Junior division champions were Cotton City 4 H'ers first with Girl Scouts Clusters second. Business division repeat winner Shady Grove. Border Cowboy Truck Stop second and Western Bank third. Notable contestants included 72 year old Marie and Clayton Yarbrough of Animas riding with their 54 year old married couple act. Newcomers Ike Smalley and Bill Cobb attended with a 1918 Dodge. Dancing horses from Hurley and El Charros de Norte drew praise. Chamber president Hill thanked participants and organizers.

Soap Box Derby Plans Gaining Momentum

Officials meet at Rico's Cafe on Thursday September 13 at 7 00 p m to finalize derby plans as races rapidly approach. All those in involved capacity must attend to ensure smooth operations and compliance with event requirements.

Administrators Enthused Over New School Year

The board heard remarks from all three principals and the superintendent praising the start to the 1984-85 year. Council Hears Marino Land Purchase Request

City Council addresses a land purchase by Carl Marino for a proposed pre manufactured housing plant. Marino seeks to buy twenty acres east of North Street south of Hidalgo Auto Salvage yard and lease purchase an additional twenty acres nearby at ten thousand dollars per twenty acre plot. A revised animal control ordinance raises fines for unvaccinated or untagged pets and sets yearly renewal penalties. The city approves a contract with Andrea Howson for pound operations and halves revenue from fines to fund a new pound facility. Bill Harrison presents a Region V plan to run Lordsburg Pyramid Village, with signatures anticipated Sept 11 and 12, and all Pyramid Village staff to receive 15 day termination notices.

Sam Raley Passes Away In Silver City

Sam Wilson Raley, 71, died Saturday in Silver City. Born March 8, 1913 in La Luz to Bob and Lucy Raley, he moved to Lordsburg in 1952 after retirement from farming and construction. Survived by wife Tommie, son Bob and Carolyn of Flagstaff, and grandsons Marshall and Richard Pratt Raley. Graveside services were held September 5 at Mt View Cemetery with pallbearers Sims Bowers Norman Baker Earl Anderson Bobby Bivens Ted Wright and Charley Anderson. Honorary pallbearer Gene Bishop.
