Bill Mondale son of Walter Mondale presided at a Democratic Rally luncheon at the Holiday Restaurant in Lordsburg Monday. George Craig introduced Field Coordinator Bodine Paterson and Mondale, who attacked President Reagan over copper imports and promised to fix the deficit, boost exports, and create jobs. Lois Howard and Hidalgo County Democrats organized the luncheon buffet.

Soap Box Derby Plans Continue at Lordsburg Event
Heidi Anderson leads the third annual Soap Box Derby with a two day lineup on Saturday October 6 and Sunday October 7. The Saturday parade ends at La Fiesta Parking Lot where entries in old car club and soap box categories are judged by three judges on design condition and uniqueness. A new Senior Citizens Breakfast supports the Senior Citizen Fund with a 2.50 dollar plate featuring biscuits sausage eggs orange juice and coffee. After breakfast and parade, Border Cowboy hosts an outdoor hamburger fry and drinks. Activities at Short Park start at 1:00 p.m. with dance groups music contests square dancers break dancers fiddlers and mariachis. Continued on Page 2.

Four inspectors face firing and bribery charges after an undercover state police operation caught Lordsburg workers Felix Jimenez Bernardo Talavera and two New Mexico colleagues accepting cash payments of 20 and 40 dollars. The overloaded oil mud truck was weighed down under orders from Hidalgo Magistrate. Myers, a third Lordsburg employee, received commendation for stopping the illegal load and rejecting a bribe.
