Utility Bills Mailed for July August Services

The City of Lordsburg mailed utility bills on Friday August 25 reflecting service from July 7 to August 7, 1978. A computer problem caused the billing delay.

Negotiations Underway to Reopen Hidalgo General Hospital

Local officials report Hidalgo General Hospital may reopen before year’s end. Four groups expressed interest in operating the hospital, including Hospital Affiliates International Inc of Austin and El Paso’s Eastwood Hospital and Medical Clinic. Eastwood plans to install a cardiac care unit and link to El Paso via computer terminal. both groups require two physicians on staff. A public meeting is set for September 5 at the county courthouse.

Texas Residents Jailed After Hit Run Incident

Two Austin residents Brenda Lovett and Tony Leopard were jailed in Hidalgo County on charges of leaving the scene of a property damage accident after a Sonic Drive In hit and run. Police say Leopard struck two cars and a fence, then Lovett drove away. Officers stopped the car on I-10 east at mile 36. Additional charges cited for extensive damage to cars and Sonic fence.

One Arrested Following Local Stabbing Incident

Eddie B Aguilera 20 of Lordsburg held in Hidalgo County Jail on $5,000 bond after arraignment on aggravated battery charge tied to Aug 23 apartment stabbing of Floyd Hayes 38. Hayes treated at Hillcrest Hospital in Silver City. police say statements from witnesses completed the investigation.

Kirt J. Furtado an 18 year old from Watsonville California is held in Steamboat Springs Colorado after Hidalgo County warrants allege burglary and larceny Darnell recovered 348 dollars of 650 dollars worth of stolen goods including a camera from Animas High School and Leitendorf Steak House investigation continues and more charges may follow Also Governor Bruce King and wife will visit Lordsburg on September 7 and 8 For Handicapped Children board meeting set for September 9 at 9 30 A M in Silver City at 309 West College Avenue

The Lordsburg Municipal School Board will hold its regular monthly meeting on September 5 at 7 p.m. in the Superintendent's office.

Judge rules for PD in EEOC discrimination suit

U S District Judge H Vearle Payne ruled in favor of Phelps Dodge Corporation in a discrimination case filed by the EEOC. The court found Julio C Martis was fired for unsatisfactory performance and personal conflicts, not his Dominican origins. Company officials were unaware of Martis's nationality when they terminated him after evaluating his work.

Hidalgo County Fair Week Begins in Lordsburg

The Hidalgo County Fair opens next week in Lordsburg with entries judged Thursday an old timers parade Friday and Junior Rodeo Saturday. Gate admission is 1 for adults and 50 cents for children six to 12, under six free. General admission is one day and includes rodeo entry. Fair Board president is Twila Willis with secretary Jean Payne treasurer Lance Williams. Board members include Clyde Barringer Irene Gomez Bill Clark Johnny Robertson Annabelle Plowman Leona Hightower Jim Mortensen Bert Upshaw Tom Jackson Jim Tomerlin Clint Mortensen Lillian Richins Virginia Jones.

Local Fair Schedule Opens With Exhibits and Livestock Shows

Friday September 8 features judging at 6 PM for Exhibit Building and livestock events including swine sheep calves and horse show. Old Timers parade at 9 AM, barbecu e lunch at noon, junior rodeo at 7:30 PM. Admission $1 for adults 50c for 6 12 under free. Buildings close at 6 PM.
