Lordsburg Police Chief Bob Hall advised area residents that with the new school year all traffic laws and speed limits in school zones will be strictly enforced. He urged caution in driving through school zones to prevent accidents or injuries to children.
A $1.8 million bond issue by the Animal School District was rejected 268 to 151. Animas precinct approved 104 to 49 while Rodeo declined 25 to 10 and Playas 194 to 35. The failure was linked to letters urged against the measure by Phelps Dodge employees amid copper industry recession. The board weighs options to resubmit after 90 days or in two years, with plans for a new elementary building, upgraded facilities, and expanded offices and classrooms.
Lordsburg's Job Service office placed 552 applicants in jobs in the first three quarters of Fiscal Year 1978. A total of 696 job openings were filled with some workers holding multiple positions. The office aided 358 minority applicants and 292 youths under 22, with 480 rural placements.
Lordsburg police arrested two juveniles and one adult in Aug 15 and 16 for chewing seeds of local weeds described as hallucinogenic. Seeds from Tolbache and Angel Trumpet plants allegedly caused delirium, with one subject walking a dog that wasn’t there and another trying to walk through a solid wall. Officers warn seeds can be deadly and urge parental vigilance.
U S Border Patrol agents from Lordsburg captured seven illegal aliens on Saturday Aug 19 as they dug up Indian pottery at a ruin near Mule Creek on private property. The group claimed prior ruin excavation in the Mimbres Valley and said they were employed by a U S citizen in another state. Ongoing investigation. Lawrence Porth 19, held in Hidalgo County Jail on receiving stolen property charge for a stolen 1960 Plymouth. Bond set at 2500 after arraignment.
Lordsburg Lions Club heard two speakers on energy policy. Rick Courtney of New Mexico Energy Extension Service outlined conservation and insulation programs and heating initiatives. Robert Boody, a UCLA PhD candidate born in Syria, argued no oil shortage, urged integrating energy topics into schools and national education. Governor Apodaca accepted 1979 graduation speaker invite for Lordsburg High. Old Timers Parade floats must assemble Sept 8 at 10 a.m.
Trustees meet Tuesday to discuss water complaints from residents about mineral taste and deposits on cooling units. Mayor Koff cites analyses showing higher minerals in city water than CPS water and suggests sealing wells to fix the issue. Also notes State Highway Department letter approving turning off certain road lights due to high costs.
