Voters Go To Polls In Hidalgo County Off Year Election
Hidalgo County voters head to the polls on Tuesday for a two year term in an off year election. Four county races are contested with candidates including Sheriff John McDonald Democrat and Lloyd V. Payne Republican, District One candidates Sven Thygerson Democrat and David Chavez Republican, District Two candidates Fausto Noce Sr Democrat and John O. Schimmel Republican, and District Three Democrat incumbent Jerry Veck unopposed. District Magistrate candidates Rosa Lina Salinas Democrat and Norma Preciado write in. Several county offices lack opposition: Clerk Missy Morelos Treasurer Ramona Baisa Assessor Robert Kerr and District Attorney Michael Lewis.

Lordsburg Council Applies For Water Construction Grant
Lordsburg City Council in special session approved applying for a 162061 grant to repair the water main on Animas Street from Motel Drive to Dugan Tarango Middle School. Spokesperson Sherri Arrendondo said the 45 day project will upgrade pressure valves and replace pipes from the 1940s if weather allows. The meeting also covered education board schedule and zoning variance concerns.

Fire Ant Invasion Reported At Steins Town
Fire ants found near Steins in an old mining town draw El Paso Albuquerque and Silver City coverage. Warren Garrison says two mounds under a homemade trailer were treated with insecticides and fumigated then burned. He cautions the ants may not be eliminated and queen presence is unknown. Officials monitor burrows at Steins closely.
