Republican Lloyd Payne won Hidalgo County sheriff office by 975 to 786 over Democrat John McDonald. Democrats swept other county contests as Sven Thygerson, Fausto Noce and two more Republicans won statewide seats. Garry Carruthers led GOP in governor race 995 to 683 over Ray Powell. Lordsburg School Board heard Superintendent DeFoor describe auditors’ recommendation to name the board as trustees of a Rolfe estate endowment that started in the 1970s with 12 000 dollars for scholarships. The Thanksgiving food drive for the needy starts November 10 with Governor Tony Anaya urging participation.
