Republican Lloyd Payne won Hidalgo County sheriff office by 975 to 786 over Democrat John McDonald. Democrats swept other county contests as Sven Thygerson, Fausto Noce and two more Republicans won statewide seats. Garry Carruthers led GOP in governor race 995 to 683 over Ray Powell. Joe Sheen defeated Mike Runnels 933 to PbT. Humphries and McDaniels won state posts. other Democrats prevailed locally.

Lordsburg School Board heard Superintendent DeFoor describe auditors’ recommendation to name the board as trustees of a Rolfe estate endowment that started in the 1970s with 12 000 dollars for scholarships. The plan funds 53 000 dollars as a permanent endowment while honoring annual scholarships and college-achievement continuance.

Thanksgiving Food Drive Begins November 10
The Thanksgiving food drive for the needy starts November 10 with Governor Tony Anaya urging participation.
