Medical Complex Dedicated Reopens in Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County Medical Complex was formally dedicated Monday with Commissioner Frank Chaires and Lieutenant Governor Mike Runnels overseeing the ceremony. Commissioner Jerry Veck recalled the original closure in 1975 due to a deficit of 40 000 dollars monthly and warned deterioration if action did not occur. Donald Hooker of the Gila Regional Medical Center Board commented on the project.

Thomas Clark Appointed Assistant DA in Sixth Judicial District

District Attorney Michael J. Lewis announced Thomas T. Clark as Chief Deputy District Attorney for the Sixth Judicial District covering Luna, Grant, and Hidalgo Counties. Clark, a Luna County deputy since 1985 and full time prosecutor since 1983, will primarily handle Luna County matters and represent the district as needed.

Animas School Board Hosts Full House

Animas School Board held its October 14 meeting with about 40 attendees. Insurance premium increases due to district re rating and a proposed statewide drug and alcohol reporting form were discussed. The board did not approve the form as tabled or as a motion, and the Christmas program was approved after teacher and parent input.

Lordsburg Optimist Halloween Carnival at Youth Center

The Lordsburg Optimist Club hosts a two day Halloween Carnival at the Lordsburg Youth Center on Main Street October 29 and 30 from 6 to 10 PM each day. Food and game booths join the Haunted House two blocks away with tickets sold at the carnival and advance sales by Don Kling at 208 West 3rd Street or by phone.

Ewing Named Citizen Of The Year At Chamber Banquet

Fred Ewing born and raised in Lordsburg was honored as the nineteenth Citizen of the Year since 1965 at the Chamber of Commerce annual banquet held Monday evening in the High School Cafetorium. Ewing, after serving in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, enrolled at New Mexico A and M, now New Mexico State University.

Gravity Gran Prix Set For Saturday

Liberal Deadlines Change at Liberal Newspaper

Classifieds including yard sales are due by 2 00 PM Tuesday, and news items and columns must arrive at the office by Tuesday noon. Eight Trains Now Zipping Straight Through Lordsburg

Eight daily trains now bypass Lordsburg with Straight through runs from Tucson to El Paso. Each train carries four crew, reducing Lordsburg layovers by 32 per day. About 90 men formerly stayed nightly, costing roughly $10 per meal per man, totaling an estimated $2240 weekly. The depot employs nine, with more changes possible as testing continues.
