The Chamber of Commerce hosts a banquet and dance this Saturday night with music and socializing. The event follows a light schedule and invites members and guests to attend. Return to standard time by turning clocks back one hour after the festivities.
The October 20 Chamber of Commerce meeting named Ena Mitchell Citizen of the Year after secret balloting. Banquet and Dance set for October 29. 1984 officers were nominated and acknowledged: Harley Hill president, David Brazier first vice president, Gary Corbell second vice president, Sherri Arrendondo secretary. A Lordsburg Liberal staff seat on the board was approved as a permanent appointment.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce hosts a 1983 banquet at the La Fiesta Club with cocktail hour, buffet, and a 9 pm dance. Mrs Ena Mitchell will be named Citizen of the Year for her service to the Lordsburg area. Pre sale tickets are available from the Chamber Board and at the door.
Lordsburg submits the fiscal year 1983 Community Development Block Grant application to the state requesting 500000 for housing rehabilitation and demolition on the northside. The 1982 grant was 495000 and has created over twenty jobs while boosting local commerce and aiding low and moderate income families with safer housing. The piece notes street safety concerns on Main Street and requests for a blinking yellow light and a stop sign, inviting public input via City Hall or mail.
The Lordsburg Optimist Club will sponsor its sixth annual Halloween Carnival at the Lordsburg Youth Center on Monday October 31 with activities starting at 6 p.m. including games booths food and a 6 30 p m haunted house. The City will sell city Dog Tags for 3 at the Rabies Clinic on Saturday October 29 at the Fire Station. All dogs must wear City Dog Tags under City Ordinance 271 Sec 4. Animal Control will issue citations for dogs not tagged. Tags available at City Hall Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm with rabies certificate.
The Community Development Block Grant funds repairs for 27 Lordsburg homes, focusing on heating cooling electrical and insulation upgrades to meet state codes. Two southside homes on 4th and Sotol Streets receive emergency-focused work with ceilings lowered to cut heat loss. Modern heating and insulated windows replace hazardous systems. Hazel Ellison 74 of Lordsburg died Monday October 17 at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home. She was a long time resident, worked as a beauty operator, and belonged to the Does organization and the Methodist Church. Survivors include two brothers L E Toby Wallace and Boyd Wallace, a sister Grace Merrit, and several cousins. Funeral services were held Thursday October 20 at Heather Chapel with Rev. David Snyman officiating. Burial followed at Mt View Cemetery with pallbearers listed.
President Reagan declared three southwestern New Mexico counties federal disaster areas after heavy rainfall caused extensive flooding. Hidalgo County among them qualifies for federal aid covering up to 75 percent of public sector costs. A Federal Disaster Field Office operates at 1024 Pope Street in Silver City to disperse funds for Hidalgo Catron and Grant counties.
Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department will fingerprint children for identification at 305 South Pyramid Street on November 5 12 and 19 from 10 am to noon. Parents must contact the department by visiting the office or calling 542 8829 between 9 am and 5 pm to schedule an appointment. Ages 2 months to 10 years. required info includes child and parent names, birth details, birth certificate if available, and identifying marks.
