Lordsburg School District board heard Principal Phil DeFoor say athletic coaches may soon face mandatory certification. The New Mexico Athletic Association plans a Spring 1984 vote on certification rules requiring coaching study in coaching philosophy, injury prevention and first aid, and CPR. The measure includes education in physical education, with possible exemptions for experienced coaches.

Increase in illegal alien apprehensions at Lordsburg border station
At the Lordsburg Border Patrol station the 1982 83 fiscal year ended with 4912 apprehensions of illegal aliens up from 3412 the prior year a 44 percent rise. Monthly arrests rose from 284 to 409 as efforts with Hidalgo County Sheriff improved.
