Residents statewide will set clocks back one hour before bed Sunday October 30 to switch from Daylight Saving Time to Mountain Standard Time. The change aligns local time with standard time in the region.

The N M Tourism Policy Study Regional Workshop in Silver City identified three major problems for Grant Hidalgo Luna and Catron counties including inadequate advertising limited activity information and lack of on arrival accommodations. Officials stressed local input shaping state tourism goals and potential pilot projects under highway beautification rules. Local leaders and businesspeople pressed for ongoing citizen-legislator interaction to translate regional talks into action.
Prominent Lordsburg businessman Joel Wesley Bivens died unexpectedly October 25. He owned Bivens Motel and Bivens Furniture Store, worked 23 years for Southern Pacific Railroad, and with his son owned Bivens Lumber and Supply. Survived by wife Lillie Bell, six children, siblings, and many relatives. Services set for October 28 at the First Assembly of God Church with designated pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
Hidalgo County officers recovered a 1977 Ford Courier stolen in Tucson. Deputy Mejia checked the car and found it not reported stolen. later Chief Deputy Moore found it abandoned with signs of hot-wiring and a teletype to Tucson. The owner, alerted by telephoto, picked up the vehicle in Lordsburg on Saturday.
Three Lordsburg police officers including acting chief Bob Hall were arrested after failing to appear at preliminary hearings in Silver City. Hall and patrolman Dean Hall faced burglary testimony, while Phillip Rodriguez faced firearm possession charges. All three surrendered, posted bail or were released on recognizance. The incident was deemed a misunderstanding by Chief Hall. A second item notes the Optimist Club Halloween Carnival at the Youth Center on Main Street starting 7 p.m. Saturday October 29 with 12 booths already set up.
