Lordsburg High School hosts Laguna-Acoma Friday night for the regional football playoff opener at 8 p.m. with special ticket prices set at Adults 2.50 and Students 1.50. Local fans urged to attend and support the Mavericks.
City officials report the Barneys Stage Station test hole reached 730 feet with continued water bearing strata. Public relations director notes wells sit atop a pond, while the Hidalgo County sheriff cites a burglary at Culberson place near the border. The Animas Board of Education sets a Nov 10 meeting. Chamber museum progress praised with donated space and new artifacts including a pack saddle.
Western Auto's annual catalog insert appears with this issue of the Liberal. The 6 page guide features thousands of items with sale prices valid through Christmas. Jiggs Reed and Robert Allred note no extra freight charges on most items.
Phelps Dodge Corp announces Arthur H. Kinneberg will be Senior Vice President effective November 1 1977 while remaining General Manager for Western Operations in Douglas Arizona. John A. Lentz retires as Senior Vice President but stays on the board and Holmes and Scanlon receive VP posts in Western Operations both based in Douglas Arizona.
Phelps Dodge Corp asked Lordsburg to act as bond agent to refinance about 70 million dollars of industrial revenue bonds, boosting total issuance to 100 million. Senior VP Art Kinneberg cited copper market decline and cost overruns mainly for air pollution equipment, asking an ordinance authorizing bond issuance and sale. Mayor White expressed willingness to help, noting the city’s previous debt to the company for a one million gallon water tank.
Halloween 1977 in Hidalgo County ended with few incidents and general crowds. Dances in Animas and Lordsburg, an Optimists carnival, and a Senior Citizens luncheon marked the weekend. One popcorn ball contained a needle, later returned to the store, but overall Trick or Treat activity exceeded expectations and vandalism was minimal.
Acting police chief Bob Hall says legal action may follow if an Assistant District Attorney does not publicly apologize over the arrest of Hall, his brother Dean Hall, and officer Phil Rodriguez. The trio, cited on warrants after failing to appear for hearings, posted bonds and turned themselves in.
