District Attorney Hodges has not yet determined the authority of Albert Stevens to hold office but will decide soon. The ordinance, passed August 10 1961, abolishes the office of additional municipal judge and affects the municipal magistrate court and related matters.
Mrs. Frank Varela, trained at Civil Defense School Battle Creek Md will speak Monday at 8 p m in the high school auditorium on Radiological Defense. She will discuss food water medical supplies waste disposal purifying water and other fallout shelter planning topics. Lordship? Lordsburg civil defense director James Kinkema expects about 200 attendees to learn how to prepare for radiation fallout dangers.
Lordsburg hosts Hot Springs in district action Saturday night at 8. Lordsburg has not lost a conference game but has a tie with Tularosa, and a win would put them in strong position for the district title with Hatch as the remaining challenger.
The local LULAC Chapter 358 plans a cleanup campaign this Sunday October 29. Members will clear alleys and curbs using machinery furnished by the City of Lordsburg as part of efforts to improve the community.
Ballots for the Lordsburg Hidalgo county Chamber of Commerce primary were counted at 2 00 p m Monday. Nominees on the ballot to be mailed in November: B M Kimbley Alvin Parker Ed H Hitson Wesley Freeburg C V Nunn and Howard Ross. The top three vote earners will become directors for a three year term starting January 1 1962.
The Moctezuma Club will sponsor a Halloween Carnival at Moctezuma Hall on Tuesday night October 31 starting at 6 30. Games and food will be sold with prizes and proceeds go to the building fund.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber hosted a luncheon for the U S Highway 70 Caravan and six guests from Safford Arizona at the local high school cafeteria. Officials noted the nicest reception on their 2300 mile trip from Morehead City North Carolina before the group continued to Apache Junction Arizona.
The Telephone Pioneers of America will mark their fiftieth anniversary on November 2 with Walter K. Koch delivering a message from Denver to 4,500 members and guests via private wire at 32 banquet sites across Mountain States territory. Howard Ross notes 277 New Mexico members among 205,000 nationwide.
Community Public Service won first place in its group in the Public Utilities Division of the National Safety Council fleet safety contest announced at the National Safety Congress in Chicago. CPS has earned seven first place finishes in 15 years, with two seconds and a third.
Young people in the community will Trick or Treat for UNICEF from 6 to 6 30 pm on October 30. They will wear UNICEF stickers signed by Rev. W. C. Strickland and be aided by Mrs. Wesley Freeburg's fifth grade. They plan door knocking south and east of Animas Street asking neighbors to give to UNICEF World Children.
Gerald H. Lake of Kruger Lake and Henderson announced preliminary plans for a new Hidalgo County Hospital with 25 beds to be built on a five acre tract between Hardin and Randall extensions. Bond funds of 250000 will be matched by federal Hill Burton aid, funding a modern hospital after the current facility operated under a temporary license. Construction is expected to take about 12 months with site adjustments to extend 13th Street east.
The Elks Lodge on Highway 80 east of town formally dedicated its new building in memory of the late Nat Gammon. Robert E. Boney of Chicago delivered the opening address, with Sherwood Culberson giving the opening speech. About 200 attended, with guests including Mrs. Nat Gammon and several Elks officials.
