Bays Football Petition Saturday Event At R V School

Gusty winds hampered the Bays Football petition at R V elementary, with boys from ages eight to ten competing for warm jackets as prizes. Organizers included coaches Ralph Craig Jim Warren James Palmer and Smith Co sponsor Russell Smith who praised school cooperation and noted plans for an annual event.

Dedication of New Elks Lodge Building

Open house and dedication set for October 21 at Lordsburg Elks No. 1813 on Highway 80. Grand Exalted Knight Robert F Boney of Las will deliver remarks at 2 15 p m after a noon barbeque. U S Highway 70 Caravan Visits Lordsburg Saturday

The U S Highway 70 Association led a caravan that departed Morehead City North Carolina and will stop in Lordsburg on Saturday October 21 from 1 30 to 2 30 pm A free luncheon at the school cafetorium at 1 30 is hosted by the Chamber of Commerce The caravan includes 25 to 30 members several officials and a governor or emissary Local Highway 70 members are invited to attend

ASC Committee Elections Near Hidalgo County

Eligible farmers are reminded that ASC county and community elections will be held by mail from November 1 to November 13, 1961. Three community committeemen and two alternates will be chosen, with the chair and vice chair serving as delegates to the county convention to select the ASC committee.

A golf tournament will be held this Sunday October 22 at 1 30 p m on the course north of town inviting men and women golfers to compete in a local event.

Delta Wing Interceptors Aid Crippled C 47 Recovery

1st Lt. John Cochran directing radar near Pruem Germany guided F 102 pilots Col. John H. Buckner and Maj Dan Brooksher to a crippled C 47 about 60 miles northeast of Bitburg. The Gooney Bird landed safely at Bitburg AB after coordinated radar and jet interceptor action. Cochran, son of Mr and Mrs Ben Cochran of Lordsburg, was promoted to captain.

Verne Payne Wins UNM Law School Scholarship

H Verne Payne of Lordsburg received a graduate tuition scholarship from the University of New Mexico School of Law. He is the son of Mr and Mrs H Vearle Payne and earned a B A in political science from Brigham Young University last year.

Hidalgo County Farm Bureau Holds Annual Convention

The Hidalgo County Farm and Livestock Bureau held its convention in Animas on Saturday Oct. 7 with President Jack Gauthier presiding. Guest speaker John Augustine Las Cruces spoke on Building Your Farm Bureau. New officers elected included Virgil Jones chair, Mrs Virgil Jones chairwoman, LaVar Merrell vice chairman, E L Payne secretary and treasurer. Prizes were awarded in senior and junior talent contests and various community contributors received items from local businesses.

Cafeteria School Bus Fund Seeks Donations

The cafeteria school bus fund reports no donations this week and notes the second month’s expenses paid, leaving a $90 balance that will cover the service for about one and three fourths months. The writer hopes the Department of Finance will fund next year and asks for contributions to Mrs. Charles Williams at 412 5th Street.

The Maverick Booster Club will hold an important meeting on Monday October 23 at 7 30 p m at City Hall. A football film will be shown and the public is invited to attend.

Federal Funds Allocated For Hidalgo Hospital

The State Advisory Hospital Council allocated 250000 dollars for Hidalgo County's Lordsburg hospital as part of the Hill-Burton funds totaling 1175695.88 for the year. The Lordsburg request is for a new facility with other grants funding expansions to existing hospitals. County officials and hospital board members attended the Albuquerque meeting awaiting final action by the State Board of Health to release the funds. Hidalgo County has a 250000 dollar bond approval from November to provide matching funds.

Hidalgo County Farm and Livestock Bureau met at Range Cafe with twenty two members present. President Jock Gauthier led the session after a meal as committees reported hospital building details and a membership drive honoring Jack Gauthier Richins Folk McCarty Merrell and Payne. Yucca District Meet Scheduled For Lordsburg

The Yucca Sub-District of the W. W. S. C. S. of the Methodist Churches met in Silver City on October 12 with about 50 women attending. The district includes Bayard Deming Hated Truth or Consequences Silver City and Lordsburg. The meeting chaired by President Mrs. W. H. Gary discussed W. S. C. S. program parts and announced three meetings this year with the next to be in Lordsburg on February 8, 1962. Lordsburg attendees listed included Mrs. Elmer Jeanes Mrs. M. Messecar Mrs. Ray Neher Mrs. Butters and Rev. and Mrs. W. C. Strickland.
