The Mavericks, after two tight losses to Hatch in two years, prepare for today’s game at Hatch following a week of hard practice under Coach Ehrhardt hoping for victory.
Lordsburns Lordsburg unable to finish drives as Duncan overcomes 24 16. Day scores twice for Duncan while Kerr and Figueroa contribute as Lordsburg commits miscues and fumbles. Mavericks rack up 23 first downs but fail to convert in crucial moments.
The Wilson girls defeated Central in a volleyball game on Monday. Roberto Rico returns from Duncan after a month away. Celestina Diaz comes back to school after a week ill. Frank Aguila from Tucson enrolls in second grade. Lolita Rodriguez from Silver City enters the primary grade. Fifth and sixth grades win the checkerboard drill 75 to 69 in Miss Chese and Miss Crandall rooms.
A football coach tells players that the game builds individuality initiative and leadership and urges them to execute instructions precisely during practice or a game. The remark emphasizes discipline and adherence to the coach’s directives.
The Honor Roll lists thirty nine students from Watson school. Second grade six, third grade twelve, fourth grade ten, fifth and sixth grades one. The perfect attendance list totals forty eight with second grade eleven, third grade ten, fourth grade nine, and fifth and sixth grades eighteen.
The Home Economics Department under Mrs. Silver planned and prepared a dinner for twenty Lions last Tuesday. Members served by Goldie Wright Elaine Burrass and D M aris Silver. Menu included peach cocktail vegetable salad pork chops with apple rings green beans mashed potatoes gravy hot biscuits preserves caramel pudding and coffee.
Notes indicate Refugio Hernandez was absent the first of the week due to illness. The Manual Training department is producing laborers and the American Literature class is studying the Revolutionary Era.
Seven sets of books have been purchased recently by the Board of Education for the schools. They include a Science Reference books set an International Atlas a set of books of People and Lands Books of History and a Dictionary of History Facts.
Central notes show a week long focus on vegetables in meals with a vegetable man project. Fifth graders elect leaders including Alex Laurinas and Elmo Henslee. Eighth grade plans a Halloween party and boasts a spelling chart win and workbook score.
Girl Scouts held a meeting on October 19 with regular business and Patrol Corners planning merit badges. After the meeting, the group spent remaining time in laying games.
Sixty three students earn the Central School Honor Roll for the six week period ending October 13. The criteria now require a department grade of A and no grade below B.
The Business and Professional Woman's Club hosts a Silver Tea on Sunday October 29 at the home of Superintendent and Mrs. R A Palm to raise funds for a Lordsburg High School scholarship for the top graduating girl. Gracie Conner, last May’s award recipient, now studies in Silver City and is college class president. An afternoon program showcases piano solos, vocal pieces, readings, and duets from local performers.
Mr and Mrs John L Augustine moved with their daughter Mrs Alvin Parker and granddaughter Barbara Ann Parker to Silver City yesterday. Mr Parker has already prepared a cozy home in the Turner apartments. Congratulations to Silver City on the acquisition of a fine little family.
Lt. John J L Augustine Jo Billy Lewis and friend Hersch Jones arrived from the New Mexico Military Institute Wednesday to enjoy a brief deer hunt in the vicinity.
John T. McCabe notes he has almost reached fifty years in town as Uncle B. B. Ownby, former mayor and pioneer county commissioner, arrives for a Liberal representative visit.
Mrs Harry Scofield bought a Kingston Ulster County Gazette from January 4 1800 noting the death and burial of George Washington. The four page paper lists sheriff sales and real estate ads including a racialized sale of a slave. Mrs Enya Campbell of Los Angeles sent the issue.
Mrs E S Lewis hosted a Tuesday meeting of the N and T Club. Members attended except Mrs A W Morningstar. Guests included Emma Turner of Rocksprings Texas Margaret Eeichelberger and Mary M Vasse. A miscellaneous shower for Mrs Mims who departs Friday for Odessa Texas. Pumpkin pie whipped cream and coffee served. Next meeting at Mrs W H Small next Tuesday.
Frank Corbell M C Moore Ira Conner Robert Corbell and Pudgie Corbell travel toward the Mogollon mountains to await the deer hunting season. Miss Ethel Thomas home economics teacher at Deming visits Mrs. Margaret Woodward Jr for the weekend.
A frantic Halloween kid terrorized a neighborhood by chasing cats and rats, catching bats, and stealing door mats before speeding around the corner. Residents described the spree as startling and unusual for the holiday.
A man named Mr Allen meets someone face to face and his heart sinks. The encounter ends a Halloween prank described as a short, local incident with minimal detail.
Reverend S. M. Mims and family relocate from the west New Mexico Conference to Odessa Texas as Reverend C. H. Hatfield departs Lordsburg for the pulpit there. Hatfield will preach at both morning and evening services Sunday.
The Cloverdale Bridge Club gathered at the H. W. Austin homestead near Culberson Ranch on a Saturday in October for the 59th birthday of H. W. Austin. Guests included Fred Bass Henry Kicks Willliam Pascoe Ben Robertson Tom Cheonexy John Stewart and Miss Perkins. Mrs. O B Dailey of El Paso provided harmonica music with Mrs. Austin at the piano. Prizes were awarded and gifts given to Mr. Austin, the standout present being the largest tomato grown in the locality which he could not finish alone.
Palador Pavilion hosts a masquerade dance on Saturday night October 24 with liberal prizes for best costumes for ladies and gents. The Fishing Pond by the Business and Professional Woman's Club promises amusement. Music by Four Wonders. Admission is 1.10 per couple. Dance begins at eight.
A Tuesday evening meeting of the Junior Game Protective Association at Hotel Hidalgo drew sixteen members. Six new memberships were accepted and items on the deer season and boys camps planned for next June were discussed. New applicants listed include Billie Smith C H Cross Fr Dunagan Arthur Danich Lawrence Lyall and Don Kerr. Mrs. Frank Weldon Jr served as Secretary Treasurer.
Postmaster Montague has received many flowers since taking charge. The bouquets are mainly mauve and include grown and cut varieties enough to decorate several post offices.
The State Highway department tries a single shot asphalt penetration on two miles of road from Lorekburg on 180. A layer of asphalt is spread once and covered with Chats rock from El Paso to evaluate feasibility for wider use.
In honor of their potato crops Virden plans a Potato Day Celebration on November 3 at one o'clock. The program includes a free barbecue and a short program with sports exhibitions and potato displays for all visitors to enjoy the afternoon.
Stock broker Huling shipped eleven cars of dehorned yearlings to the Kansas City market this week. Buyer Joe Evans, a familiar picker, acquired the lot.
The body of Attorney Robert J. West age 52 was found in his apartment north of the Railroad after an apparent fall from bed. West a former chancellor of the Okalona Mississippi Judicial District and long practicing lawyer in Florida left behind a daughter and relatives. C G Perry of Steins wired relatives in Mississippi as plans were discussed to bury him in his home state. Heather Mortuary prepared the remains awaiting further developments.
A Cureton family reunion at the R W Cureton ranch last Sunday drew Mr and Mrs R W Cureton and children, Mr and Mrs Kos Cureton and children, Mr and Mrs Art Shoemaker and son, Mr and Mrs J B Amos, Mr and Mrs W S Gilbert and son Leslie of Fort Bayard, J W Cureton and six grandchildren. The group left with ten fried chickens and all the trimmings.
A large crowd attended the State Mansion Day program at the local Baptist church on Sunday morning. Mrs. Felix Jones and Mrs. Sam Gass organized the event with the Worthwhile orchestra supplying music. The pastor M. C. More spoke on missions and the day featured a luncheon on the Parks lawn.
The Monday Bridge Club gathered at Mrs. Jack Heat her residence. Present were Mesdames J. K. Vinson, R. A. Egan, Oscar Allen, S. E. Allen, Ernest Short and host Mrs Heat her. Guests were Mesdames W. Boswell and Harry Martin. Mrs. Short won high. Pecan pie and coffee were served.
National broadcast features Mrs. Franklin D Roosevelt addressing Girl Scouts and friends on Friday November 3 from :00 to 5 15 P M over WJZ New York NBC network. Talk tops the national program for Girl Scout Week October 29 November 4.
The Lordsburg Lions Club Tuesday honored retiring Secretary Treasurer S M Mims with commendations and a pearl fountain pen. Resolutions praised his three-year service as pastor, teacher, and community leader as he departs Lordsburg for Odessa Texas. Mrs Silver and her Home Economic girls served a three course luncheon.
The Methodist Church banquet room was filled with friends bidding farewell to Rev S M Mims and his family who leave for Odessa Texas this week. Mrs Claude C Fuller presented a 26 piece 1847 Rodgers silver set and Mrs Hichelberger received a purse as tokens of affection from the assembled group.
Mrs. Erma Hubbell assistant manager of the El Mirador hotel in Palm Springs California and Mrs Edith Boydston Clark a pilot who knows famous flyers visited on Tuesday driving a new Packard. They toured the airport during their brief stop.
George D Blood from Cheyenne leads a Wyoming group including Paul Paulson Kress Finch Otto Henke Earl Benton and Marshall Reynolds to Hidalgo County to explore mining properties. The Thursday night club gathered at Mrs Claude Olneys with attendees Mr and Mrs Maurice Eppstein Mr and Mrs Harry Martin Claude Olney Mrs J K Vinson and guests Mesdames Rex Kipp and Blackie Martin. Mrs Kipp won high.
Mrs. M. A. Crooms of Animas visited her daughter Mrs. Chas. Conmer last Saturday, sharing time with family.
The Hidalgo County Court House block earns praise from locals and visitors for its attractive upkeep since 1924. Chairman J H McLeod notes 22 new trees planted and a fresh cement coat on the fence. The interior is kept immaculate by custodian Bailey Smith, with irrigation improvements highlighted by the New Mexico Extension News. People from upstate compare it favorably to harsher northern county buildings.
The W. M. A. held its regular gathering this week at Mrs. Tom Kerr’s residence. Present were D. O. Colson, M. C. Moore, Felix Jomes, F. Corbell, C. Pence, M. Pierce, F. S. Christian, F. A. Sykes, Mae Sykes and H. Gordon. Refreshments of chicken sandwiches cake and coffee followed the lesson from Acts 11 chapters.
Miss Gracie Conner and Basil Fuller returned home from the State Teachers' College for a Sunday visit likely sharing stories of campus life and mutual acquaintances.
