The Mavericks failed to convert scoring chances as Lordsburg fell to Hatch 19 to 0 in a hard fought football clash. Key plays and penalties shaped the outcome while Hatch dominated with five pass interceptions and solid running.
A valley bell game between Central and Wilson girls produced a 7 to 1 Wilson victory. Classroom notes report several student and class averages and several first graders returning after absences.
Superintendent R. A. Palm and Principal L. Cloud Miller travel Tuesday to Albuquerque to attend the New Mexico Educational Association. The full faculty will not attend together this year. Mr. Miller will represent them as the group participates in a weeklong program.
No game is scheduled by Cosch Ehrhardt for the Mavericks this weekend yet a game with the Opeons may be played Thursday. On Armistice Day they travel to Deming to meet the strong Deming Wildcats in the District, a top season matchup.
The fourth grade posted an 82 average to win the checker board wit contest while the eighth grade scored 6 on arithmetic work books and claimed the spelling chart with an average BY Frances Fitzpatrick leads the eighth grade in spelling efforts.
Members of the Girl Scout Troop met on October 4 1933 to set a permanent date for regular meetings. Wednesday was selected as the regular meeting day with the Cactus Patrol delivering the program.
Lion President Pally and Tail-twisting Miller were absent in Albuquerque for a State Teachers Association meeting. Cub Fitzgerald’s initiation drew attention as Lion President Shellbere asked Ken Harnham to explain a blindfolding practice. The meeting debated the best way to treat wandering tourists and agreed against encouraging them.
The Monday bridge club met at the home of Mrs. Ernest Short. Present were Mesdames J Lucke J K Vinson R Egon O Allen S F E Allen host. Guests included Mesdames O F Wogstad and George Tyra. Mrs Egon won high. Cocoanut pie and coffee were served.
Mes. W. H. Small was hostess to the N. and T. Club Tuesday. Members present were Mesdames J. F. Allen S. E. Allen S M. Chase Chas Voller A. L. Green Geo. P. Jeffus Geo. Trimble. Refreshments included fenit salad hot biscuits and coffee.
At the council gathering next Monday night November 6 the trustees will consider issuing beer licenses. All applications will be acted upon.
Dr. C. P. Austin and son J. T. returned from a hunting trip with a bear and two fine bucks. The bear will be tanned for a rug. If two bears had been brought back, J. T. would wear a bear overcoat.
The Thursday bridge club met at the home of Mrs. Ernest Short with members Mesdames S. E. Allen Oscer Allen Claude Olney Maurice Eppstein J. K. Vinson O. Wogstad and hostess. Mrs Rex Kipp was a guest and Mrs Vinson won high.
The High School auditorium drew a large audience for the Little Theatre Players presenting Loose Ankles with Dorothy Chase Lister in a triumphant return. Tom Bleanvelt and the supporting cast delivered strong performances under HM Gowwee’s direction as Prof. Mearns led the orchestra and school drama staff in a successful evening.
A lively Masquerade Parade at Muledoe Sororder enhanced the Helio season with colorful costumes and crowd energy. Prizes went to Betty Smith and Miles Cohen in Pirate outfits. notable costumes included Nuns Miss Pauline Retter and Mrs. Katherine Burch and a wide range of characters from Blue Satin Chinamen to a red and white Ballet. The event featured a massed march at ten thirty with many groups represented and strong audience turnout. The Business and Professional Women's club ran a fish pond, and the Four Wonders provided marsh music. Coronadians will provide the next Saturday dance.
Frank Corbell brought in a fine twelve point buck, one of the best in years, with Reverend C. Moore and George Cureton also present. Pronk collected enough meat for several families, though Moore did not haul his.
J M Hatfield and family of Glenwood visit in the name of Rev C H Hatfield. Mr Hatfield is a brother of Rev C H Hatfield as the visit continues this week.
Howard Boyd was found dead at his ranch four miles north of the city. Felix Winslow reported the open door to Sheriff Conner, and a coroner’s jury ruled heart disease as the cause. Boyd, long engaged in mining, lived quietly and was not married. His brother Lawrence Boyd had visited from Pennsylvania.
Miss Louise Jessen of El Paso wed Hugh Garrett a Southern Pacific signal maintainer at Steins in a well appointed Episcope church ceremony. Mise Stengele was maid of honor and Harold Hulsey bridesman. The couple reside in Steimp and receive friends’ congratulations with guests Tom McCabe and Harold Scofeld from Lordsburg.
Reverend John S. Rice will return as pastor of Center Street Methodist church for the coming year. The Bishop recommended his posting back after strong local support and a year of noted service. Congregation and community praise his work and character in the Tucumcari area.
George Shelly age 23, son of Mr and Mrs H H Shelly, has been made Forest Service Foreman in a CCC Camp near Santa Fe. He was among the first CCC enrollees from the region and his promotion brings pride to the area. Mrs Betty Tatsch was hospitalized briefly this week due to illness.
The Montague Brothers sold the front of their two lots at the corner of Reilroad and South Streets to Conoco Oil Company for a new filling station to be built with 70 feet of frontage and rear access. They will add a modern machine shop for automobile repair in the remaining space. Contractor Dick Tatsch heads the adobe stucco structure project and will finish as soon as possible.
The Reliable Motor Company sold a new Ford pickup to Freeman McWhorter for use on the McWhorter cattle ranch. Mr. Brown delivered the vehicle in one day and sold it the next.
Reverend C H Hatfield preached his initial sermon to a large appreciative audience in Lordsburg. He is 60 with eight children and a mother aged 84. He has twenty years in the New Mexico Conference and recently served in Odessa Texas.
The Louie Lee family expresses gratitude for condolences and beautiful floral offerings. Special thanks to Central School teachers and students for flowers, DeFogs hospital staff for care of our cousin, and Rev Hatheld his pastoral message, choir, and pallbearers.
Geo. P. Jesus traveled to Las Cruces this Saturday for the Lumberman Convention and the Las Cruces vs. El Paso football match. He was named a member of the advisory committee and a committee meeting is set for tomorrow evening November 4 in Las Cruces.
Miriam Willian hosted IPU members at a Halloween and tacky party featuring Halloween decorations, treats, and games. Prizes went to Char ley Williams for battle contest, Velma Hill for tackiest girl, and Bob Matchett for the wackiest boy. apples and day suckers were served.
The Knights and Pythian Sisters held a well attended Halloween party Tuesday evening in the K P building basement. Festivities included a Halloween decorated setting, sandwiches cake and coffee, games and dancing.
Mrs. R. A. Prim entertained at a Silver Tea sponsored by the Business and Professional Woman's Club on Sunday afternoon. The home featured yellow and white chrysanthemums and a program enjoyed by five or more attendees. Proceeds totaling $1000 benefited the club's Scholarship Fund.
Hidalgo County shines at the state contest this week at State College thanks to county agent LC Brown and home demonstrator Mrs Olive B Cruse. Six Virden boys and six Virden girls compete after intensive supervision and training, reflecting broad benefits to agriculture and youth leadership across Hidalgo Grant and Lina counties.
Dong Wah Check 33 long a popular employee at Up-to-Date Grocery Company died after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held at Heather Mortuary with Rev. Fh Hatheld of the Methodist Church delivering the sermon. Pallbearers included L. A. Bradberry and John W. Berry. Burial followed at Mountainview cemetery.
Mrs Elizabeth Gammon led a Bunco night for her Sunday School class at the Methodist Church basement with a Hallowe en theme. Guests included Outta Marie Smith Jaetta Birchfield Gladys Gene Malone Hanna Mee Hwan Dora Ellen Heather Maybelle Scott Nadine Gordon Virginia Simmons and others with Johnny Jones Billy Lee Smith Lowell Jones Irwin Ewan Bennie Cross Ray Lester and Raymond Castle attending. Ed Malone assisted.
Attorney A. W. Morning star and his wife depart Saturday for a month on the Pacific Coast for rest and recreation. Attorney W. B. Walton will manage the legal business in A. W. Morning star’s absence, having assisted during his illness and joined in several important cases.
Mrs T. B. Williams, visiting relatives in Mineral Wells Texas, suffered a fall but is improving and will not return home for several days.
Mr and Mrs Fred Gilmvan of Albuquerque arrived at the start of the week for a visit with Mr and Mrs Frank Weldon.
The death of Harry D. Hill GH removes a much beloved citizen. Born in 1865 in Deerfield Massachusetts he moved here over four years ago and was a mining and mechanical expert. He leaves his widow and nephew Jess Hill. Funeral held Thursday at Weather Mortuary with sermon by T A Phillips. Floral offerings were elaborate and a male quartet provided music.
A hunter was fatally shot by his wife during a hunting trip near Luna in Catron County on Sunday afternoon. Durward Jones, son of Mr and Mrs Louis Jones of Henwood, died of his injuries at Grant County hospital in Silver City on Monday night. This brings the current big game season fatalities in southwestern New Mexico to three.
Harold FE Scofield came home for a brief visit to his parents and now represents the Mutual Benefit Insurance Company in Carlsbad. He plans to return there Wednesday and, within a month, intends to sell all forms of insurance.
Messrs H H Condor K L Trendt O M Parks and Jesse T Smith Jr join Alice Jones Charley Miriam Williams Virginia Pauline Gass Bob Eleanor Matchett and Mary Agnes Pence for a Sunday drive to Deming to attend the B Y P U Zone Meeting. Condor Trendt and Parks provided conveyance for the group.
Lieut. Foster and Captain Jemsen piloted a BT2-B aeroplane and landed at the airport for a brief inspection late Monday afternoon.
Rev. H Hatfield and his wife drove to El Paso Mondhy and were on their way back when the brief item was recorded.
Mrs Holmes Maddox, daughter of Animas, was visiting Lordsburg on Friday.
