A tenth grader forced a school bus to turn aside to Animas valley. The rider grabbed the steering, struck the driver Mrs Tibbs, and shoved her toward the door. He fled as deputies tried to calm the disturbance. Sheriff FB Jackson was summoned but could offer no explanation.
Directors ballots for the Lordsburg-Midvale Chamber of Commerce were mailed October 17 for the November election. Members are urged to return ballots. counting will be handled by a special committee.
NMMI opened with a scoreless first quarter then posted 19 points in the second as they blocked a kick and forced turnovers. Lordsburg Mavericks prevented a late rally, but NMMI added a TD on an interception return with the extra point missed to lead 19-6 at halftime.
Mrs. J D Marlow of Portales elected worthy grand matron and Gerald Williams of Estancia named worthy grand patron for the 58th session to be held in Albuquerque in October 1958. Numerous officers and trustees selected from Albuquerque Gallup Tyrone Taos Farmington and other New Mexico communities.
Robert Swan Unit No. 30 of the American Legion prepares a box of Christmas gifts from New Mexico units for the Veterans Hospital at Ft. Bayard. Gifts will be displayed in the hospital recreation room and wrapped and mailed by volunteers. Donations of unwrapped gifts or ribbon bows are welcome and can be delivered to Mrs. Olla Williams or arranged with Mrs. Elmer Jeanes. Gifts must arrive at Ft. Bayard by November 1.
Mr and Mrs Frank Winters were in Silver City and Ft Bayard on Thursday. Mrs Winters attended the indoctrination and orientation course at the veterans hospital. The annual course is conducted by hospital staff for volunteer workers.
The Grand Temple Sessions 1 Pythian Sunshine Girls held an open installation at KP Hall at 8 p.m. Miss Rajene Miller of Belen succeeds Miss Josephine Willis of Socorro as grand royal princess for 1957 1958 and will be installed this evening. Janice Lehman and Mary Florence Baker from Laordsburg added as grand officers. Jackie McGhee elected to a grand office.
The Band Parents Club met in the Band Room with president Mrs Ruth Bishop presiding. Roger Brandt reported plans for an auction sale to be held in the gymnasium in November. The group meets the third Monday each month at 7 p.m. in the Band Room, hoping attendance will rise.
State College New Mexico high school administrators counselors and teachers will travel to New Mexico A M in mid November for conferences with their former students. The annual high school conference helps freshmen bridge the gap to college. Interviews by high school representatives, program discussions, class tours, and a banquet are on the agenda.
Pack 120 met Friday night in the First Methodist Church basement with 16 Cubs and parents present. James Murray and Carol Odlum earned Webb badges as the highest Cub Scout honor, while Robert Williams received old arrow points and two silver arrows for wolf rank and several others earned Bobcat badges. Bob Williams acted as scout master in A. D. Black’s absence and directed members in making foot cleaners for home use. Refreshments followed the gathering.
Frank A. Chavez, a Lordsburg merchant for nearly 35 years, reopens Chavez Jewelry and Lapidary on October 25 in the former Lordsburg Pharmacy building. He purchased H. H. Conder's jewelry stock and added small appliances, baby goods, furniture, kitchenware, toys, and gifts. A steady, satisfied customer is preferred to a fast dollar.
The Lordsburg freshmen beat Cobre 19 to 0 to raise their record to 3-2. Ray Rodriguez scored in the second quarter and kicked the extra point to lead. William McDonald, David Estrada added TDs but extra points were missed. Lordsburg hosts Western or Silver City next Tuesday.
Mrs. Myrtle Tenney reports her son Lynn Tenney of Sacramento California has been elected vice president and manager of agencies for California Western States Life Insurance Co. He previously led Cal Western Life’s agencies in Dallas and spent 12 years with Republic Life Insurance Co. in Dallas. He will oversee over 400 life underwriters across 44 offices in the West Southwest and Hawaii.
Dick Rice flew to Denver this morning to participate in a two day meeting of the March of Dimes campaign chairmen for this area.
