District 15 comprises Deming Hatch Las Cruces Central Animas Lordsburg and Silver City. The boundary list outlines towns within the district for convention purposes.
The Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce discusses Fall cooperation and missing details on the Hidalgo Garage float. A prior meeting reviewed Post Office requirements to obtain city delivery, with steps to number houses and secure delivery. Russell Smith will represent the chamber at the dedication of the US Highway 70 bridge at Bylas. also noted is the Banner Mining Co facing indefinite closure due to copper prices.
The Band Parents Club will meet Monday night October 21 in the high school auditorium room. Members are urged to present by president Ruth Bishop.
Sue Freeburg of Lordsburg is the newly elected president of the district Future Teachers of America. The ceremony on the Western High School Silver City campus included 75 students from Western, Cobre, Lordsburg and Deming with officers Julia Sandova, Jackie Galusha, and Kay Stevens among the attendees.
Scout Troop No. 122 received its 1957-58 charter in a ceremony at the Elks hall on Oct 9, presented by Fred E. Johnson to Sherwood Culberson after a flag service led by Bobby Corder. October’s theme is geology The Greatest Show On Earth. Robert Green showcased a mineral crystal collection at the Oct 14 meeting and explained mineral identification.
The Mavericks face New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell with injuries limiting options. Oscar Diaz will miss the trip and James Jackson or Robert Tibbs are doubtful. the Tombstone game moved to Saturday the 26th with season finale against Truth or Consequences on November 1 at the high school stadium.
The regular monthly Cub Scout Pack meeting of Pack No 120 is set for tonight at First Methodist Church at 7 30. It is family night and all Cubs are urged to bring their parents.
The county health department announces no clinic at the courthouse on Wednesday October 23 due to personnel attending the teachers convention in Albuquerque New Mexico.
Telford Davis of the State Tuberculosis Association led a Hidalgo County group in a reorganization meeting at Mrs Frank Smith Jr house. New board members include Mrs Ruby Jeanes and others with Mrs Effie Heather retiring as board chair and Rev Arthur Shaw succeeding her. The group emphasized the November 15th Hist Scal Sale to raise funds for tuberculosis programs.
Virden youths Chester Jones Gerald Thyger son Gary Hatch and Neil Merrell attended an FFA convention in Kansas City after achieving top stock judging scores in Tucson. Jones led the state in stock judging. Hatch Thygerson and an O'Dell boy from Franklin formed the winning team. Merrell replaced the absent O'Dell boy. Thomas Pace of Duncan accompanied them.
The Lordsburg freshman football team overcame a six point first half gap to defeat the Cobre Indians 20 to 6. Willian McDonald returned a punt for a touchdown, Jim Evans added the extra point, and in the second half Lordsburg added two more scores and an extra point. The next freshman game is set for October 22 at 2 30 p.m.
A hail storm hit Virden Wednesday night causing considerable damage to flower and vegetable gardens and trees. The hail stayed localized to the town while farms in the valley were spared. The upper valley also reported hail damage Saturday night.
The Banner mine enters its second week of shutdown from Oct 7 due to copper at 26 cents. Superintendent Frank Bowman says the loss persisted for months, 113 laid off with 25 kept, development work continues and the main shaft is sunk. Resumption hinges on copper price recovery.
Eighteen Lordsburg High School singers joined a delegation to Las Cruces to compete in the Southwest District chorus tryouts for a place in the all-state chorus. Participants included eight pianists, tenors Keith Morris to Jim Culberson, basses Jim Redford and John Atkinson, with auditions judged by vocal instructors. Results will be published in December. Director Roger Brandt and sponsor Mrs. Damon Dunagan led the group.
Wesley Freeburg announces Lordsburg schools will be dismissed Wednesday Thursday and Friday to attend the New Mexico Education Association convention in Albuquerque on October 23 24 and 25.
The ladies of the Eastern Star extend a blanket invitation to Lordsburg residents to dine tonight from 6 to 8 at the Masonic Hall. Menu includes chili beans salad coffee hot rolls and dessert. A good supper is promised.
