Rodeo Winners Crowned at Lordsburg Fairgrounds

Large crowds attended the Lordsburg Fairgrounds rodeo over the weekend where winners were announced in each event. Sherwood Culberson listed results in order of finish, with A C Gruwell of Lordsburg taking steer riding, A B Hobencamp Tucson winning bulldogging, and teams led by Clyde Alfred John Rhodes from Tucson.

Pythian Sisters Plan Twenty Fifth Birthday Observance

The Pythian Sisters announce a twenty fifth birthday observance on Monday October 28 at 8 p m with Mrs Bethel Fuller chairing the evening. Charter members and past chiefs will assist and a brief business session precedes entertainment.

Women Entertain At Tea In Showing Of Pastels

The Lordsburg Woman's Club hosted a Sunday tea from 3 to 5 PM in the club building with 15 pastel paintings by New Mexico artists on display. Works were borrowed from the Santa Fe museum. decorations featured fall flowers. Mrs R B Ownby and Mrs George Trimble presided. hostesses included Mrs H H Bryant, Mrs R E Buvens, Mrs C B Austin, Mrs J R Bradford, Mrs A L Green and Miss Ima Fairley. A large visitor turnout toured the exhibit. The display will continue at the clubhouse through Navy Day and again Sunday 3 to 5 PM, with visitors welcome.

Dokey Temple Planned for Lordsburg Pythians in November

A new Dokey Temple for Lordsburg is to be instituted November 13 14 led by Fallis Rees Imperial Prince of Denver. The Knights of Pythian Lodge of Lordsburg will form the nucleus with 42 current members and more than 50 visiting Pythians attending the ceremony. The event follows last week’s ceremonial accepting new Dokeys and includes a banquet and dance with leaders from Albuquerque Socorro Magdalena Animas and Lordsburg participating.

Leon Speers Joins Father's Barber Shop

Leon Speers has joined his father's barbershop after completing barber school in Fort Worth and taking the state board exam in Santa Fe on Oct. 8. He received his license on Oct. 16 and is a Lordsburg High School graduate who served 19 months in the US Navy, including 16 months in the Pacific.

Episcopal Services Planned For Sunday

The Rev. David E. Holt will conduct services and preach at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lordsburg Hidalgo on Sunday October 27 at 4 p m. The public is welcome to attend Protestant Episcopal services.

Funeral services were held for Eugene Peacock Vaughan 28 in El Paso born March 6 1918 in Playas New Mexico. He served in the Asiatic Pacific theater was captured on Bataan and held 42 months before liberation in 1945. Surviving are his mother in Dougal Arizona father in Ada Oklahoma sister in Sacramento and a brother with the Navy at San Diego.

Mabry Brings Candidacy To Lordsburg Rally

Judge Thomas J. Mabry, candidate for governor, led a Democratic rally at Lordsburg City Hall on October 16 with speaker Vearle Payne acting as MC. Mabry touted roles from constitutional convention delegate to state supreme court chief justice and described homesteading experience. Other speakers included C. C. McCullough for attorney general Joe M. Montoya for lieutenant governor and Mrs. M. A. Romero for secretary of state.

Women's Club Hears Returned Missionary

Dr. Paul De Ronde, a missionary from India Tibet, spoke at the regular monthly meeting. He played the marimba and described the people his mission serves, noting the work is independent of any church.

Fifteen Vets Enroll in Local Flight School

Fifteen veterans have signed up for flight instruction at Kuykendall Plying Service with at least twenty more showing interest under the GI Bill. Marshall Kuykendall, contractor, says two new planes will be added. Government pays all expenses except medical exams for qualified veterans.

American Legion Auxiliary Sees Meeting and Plans Carnival

Eighteen members of the American Legion Auxiliary at Rob ert Swan Post No. 30 met Oct. 16 with washing machine tickets distributed. Carnival plans were postponed possibly until next spring. Lions Club members heard Dr. Paul De Ronde a Sikkin missionary who described local conditions and customs and his work as an independent missionary. Negro Arrested in Texas Murder Case of Earl Thompson

A 22 year old man from Alexandria Virginia named Melvin Norris was arrested in El Paso by Special Agent Ben Hodges and jailed for questioning in the pitchfork killing of Earl D Thompson a 24 year old horse caretaker from Norwich New York. Thompson was found in a boxcar near the El Paso Union Stock Yards with more than 100 puncture wounds. The boxcar was bound for Phoenix Arizona. Blood spattered clothing belonging to Thompson was found with the evidence.
