The football game between Duncan, Arizona and Lordsburg moves from Saturday to Friday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 2 p m at Duncan High School Stadium after Duncan school officials requested the change.
The Lordsburg Mavericks fell 14-13 to the Deming Wildcats Friday night at Deming. Ralph Craig and 91 rushing yards highlighted a late 98 yard Mavericks drive, but a near miss on the conversion left the game decided by a single point.
The Lordsboro Chamber of Commerce plans to join Silver City groups to oppose the plan to close Fort Bayard veterans hospital. No action has been taken yet but a public record is expected against the move. Grant County families rely on the hospital for care with about 4000 veterans in Port Reward seeking care support.
Jack Heather grand chancellor of the New Mexico Knights of Pythian Lodge departs Wednesday for a statewide tour visiting ten lodges through Nov 10. He recently rose to the top rank and aims to expand new units, with stops in Socorro Magdalena Quemado Belen Cedarville Estancia Mountainair Alamogordo and Albuquerque.
New Mexico National Guard flags are to be returned from the War Department for a November 1 ceremony. Brig. Gen. C. G. Sage noted similar state programs will be held nationwide on Armistice Day. New Mexico should receive flags for the 120th Engineers 200th Coast Artillery and 804th Tank Destroyer Battalion, though the 200th and 804th flags may not exist.
M. D. K. Fitzwater, a Texas oilman, drills near San Simon Arizona to test a promising sand formation at 1995 feet. If successful, the well could mark Arizona’s first oil producer and spark a regional boom similar to Odessa Texas.
The Big Horn G P A urges cooperation with the State Game Department to prevent game violations as thousands of hunters prepare for the season. Reminders include shooting only legal game, not from a car, respecting posted property, unloading firearms, and reporting violations. About 60 members exist citywide, and new joiners are invited.
The American Legion Juniors met at Isabelle Wright's home on October 21 with Betty Anderson as president and Isabelle Wright as secretary treasurer. Attendees included Betty Anderson Margaret Richards Isabelle Wright and Helen Beach sponsor. A membership drive will begin soon for eligible applicants with a father or brother in the armed services.
The Woman's Club held a Halloween themed bridge pokeno night with 32 attendees. Mrs Evelyn Clayton led women’s bridge, Dr C B Austin won men’s bridge and traveling prize, Mrs Dorothy Beard topped women’s pokeno, Buddy Bryant won men’s pokeno, Mrs Paul Tooley took the cut prize, and pumpkin pie avec coffee was served.
The Rev. John Hopcroft arrives with his wife and son from Hollister California to lead the Assembly of God Church. He studied at Glad Tidings Bible Institute in San Francisco and has pastored several churches. This week’s services include Bible school 10 am worship 11 am evangelistic service 7 30 pm and week night services 7 30 pm Thursday.
Mrs Luella S. Clark Republican candidate for State School Superintendent returns home after an Eastern New Mexico tour. She left for Albuquerque to join other Republicans Saturday welcoming Harold E. Stassen, potential Republican presidential nominee.
Lordsburg is listed among 21 New Mexico towns eligible for a new federal post office building with an estimated cost of 95 000 pounds. War related construction restrictions and material shortages into spring make timely progress unlikely, while larger Albuquerque and Roswell projects loom.
Lordsburg will be represented January 1 in the 12th Southwestern Sun Carnival at El Paso. A queen is to be chosen and presented in the parade of 45 floats. Floats are built in El Paso with each city covering construction costs under a plan to enable more entries.

Miss Barbara Benson and Sharon and Jill Bowman hosted a Halloween costume party Thursday at the Bowman home. The dimly lit house featured skeletons and witches as guests enjoyed witch’s brew spook sandwiches and black cat’s favorites. Attendants included Glynne Jean Dorsett Carolyn Gay Dorsett Carol Templeton and helpers Mepie Phillips Sammie Willis and Marty Clayton. After Halloween games the children went on a trick or treat tour of the neighborhood.
The Knights of Pythias conferred the first rank on Jack Kirby and John Robertson. S Jack Heather grand chancellor of New Mexico and resident of Lordsburg attended the official visit. He reported his planned Lodge visits across the state beginning Wednesday.
The B Sharp Music Club presents its first program of the season Monday at 8 p m at the First Methodist Church. Guests are Mrs Sara Gass Brown and Harry Rosenstey. Brown will sing numbers published by M M Owens. The program features piano ensembles and classics including Tschaikowsky Concerto No 1 Sousa Across the Sea De Bussey Claire de Lune and Hungarian Rhapsody No 2.
Members of the Lions Club held a box supper at the Women’s Club Building last Thursday night with 40 people attending. Boxes were sold at a set price and numbered as purchases were made. The event featured a sing song with Miss Thelma Rows at the piano and games including bridge and Po-Keno. First ladies prize went to Mrs. Charles Foxworth and first men’s prize to Harry Galushe.
Delegates from Lordsburg chapter attended the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Albuquerque, October 23 to 26. Mrs. Emma Muir, Mrs. Anna Chase, Mrs. Luella Clark, Mrs. Elma Wright, Mrs. Viola Lacy and Mrs. Mary Dee Kipp were listed with duties including advisory, examining, registering and credentials committees.
Rain halted the tack course in Lordaburg delaying street paving. Heavy machinery works at Deming on the same contract. Laying the oil mat and gravel asphalt is expected to start here within two weeks, weather permitting.
Deming Lions Club hosted a Monday zone banquet and barbecue at Deming Country Club with 265 attendees from Bayard Silver City Lordsburg and Host Clubs. Lordsburg presented a program featuring soloists and a chorus, with participants named including Thelma Ross Sam Gass and Harry Rosenstein. The Tuesday noon meeting featured the high school boys chorus directed by Wesley Carkhuff.

Baby colt division Stanley Thomas Pat Carley second and colt sired by Three Bara Frank Hill third sired by Sea Lark. First place older stallion Rena Lee owned by Bob Reynolds etc. Efforts go forward for next year with Labor Day suggested as climax.
Mr and Mrs Tom Clayton Jr entertained friends Sunday at the 96 Ranch. Guests included John Bradford and family Charles Steele Frank Bowman Arlo Benson Betty Griffin Barbara Benson Bowman Karen Steele Betty Bradford Jill Bowman and Billy Steele among others.
A three acre Canaigre root project near Lordsburg, led by Harry Galusha for the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce, is funded by a federal agriculture effort. The plant, native to the desert, could yield 25 percent tannic acid, potentially making Hidalgo County a major source if successful. Next spring harvest expected with high government officials attending.
Virden junior at New Mexico State Teachers College won a special election Monday October 28 to succeed Gene Lavelle who resigned to teach in Silver City. Pace defeated Frank Goble by five votes. Frank Lopez was third. Pace, a veteran pre dental student and former STC sophomore president, is married to Agnes Mae Owens.
Mr and Mrs Henry Ellison hosted a Sunday dinner at home for their son Bob Ellison on his birthday. Guests included Mr and Mrs Billy Kimbley Mr and Mrs Freeman McWhorter Mr and Mrs Dewey Jones Mr and Mrs Bob Poindexter Henry Fuller Charles Crouch Glenn Ross Jr Ralph Craig Gerald Mosley and Henry Ellison Jr Former Navy members wore bell-bottom trousers for Navy Day. Later guests were Miss Dorothy Taylor Christine Templeton and Betty Sue Stone.
The Church of the Nazarene announces a revival series led by Rev. O. L. Wright starting Sunday with Rev. R. L. Fullilove of Watsonville, California as speaker. Services run nightly at 7 o clock with a healing message next Tuesday. Public invitation extended.

Murals shown at the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque last year and may be viewed at Central School next spring.
