BPW Club Hears Supt T J Mayfield

The Lordsburg BPW held its regular monthly meeting at the Women's Club with Supt Tom Mayfield speaking on budgets and how to make them. The group began National Business Women's Week by attending church where Rev. Franklin Poage spoke on unity and community service.

Reverend Poage Reassigned to Lordsburg Post

The Rev Franklin R Poage was reassigned by the Methodist conference in Albuquerque returning to Lordsburg for his sixth assignment. His 42 year ministry began in Missouri and included leading Scruggs Memorial in St Louis St Paul's in Denver Olive Street in St Joseph Hannibal and Alpine Texas prior to Lordsburg. He and his wife live at 306 South High Street with children Allen in El Paso and Helen in Greely Colorado.

Lordsburg Rodeo and Races Draw Big Local Crowd

Lordsburg hosts a western style weekend with rodeo events at the Fair grounds including bronc riding calf roping steer riding team tying bull dogging and a cutting horse contest. Races and horse events run through Sunday with prizes for show horses mares colts and young stock. Local firms contributed to support the event and tickets are on sale downtown with parking available at Hotel Hidalgo.

Rites Held For Mrs Oscar Allen

Funeral services were conducted at First Methodist for Mrs Cora Allen 64 who died after surgery in El Paso. Rev Franklin R Poage officiated. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery. Survived by husband Oscar and siblings. daughter Maxine had predeceased her.

Mrs Scofield Returns From BPW District Meeting

Emma Scofield state president of New Mexico Business and Professional Women's clubs traveled from Albuquerque after attending District 2 events. The session opened with Helen Higgins presiding, featuring talks by Gesslyn Odell MacDonald and Maud Doyle, with Duke City club members present. A Sunday tea at E Bernbrook's home marked National Week kickoff.

Mrs Fannie Herron Dies in Rodeo Shooting

Mrs Fannie Herron of Rodeo died suddenly at her home Tuesday morning after being shot through the heart with a 410 shotgun. A 410 gauge shotgun was found near the body. Sheriff Roy reported three letters were left to relatives by Herron.

Achievements of the Lordsburg Hidalgo Library Discussed

The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library board met October 7 with president Mrs Bethel Vernon Fuller presiding. Donations included 52 books from Mrs Causland and a $10 gift to Piney Woods school. Improvements noted were repaired roof fluorescent lighting added a cooler and 500 book plates received. Librarian salary raised to 50 dollars monthly.

Funds Sought For Community Christmas Tree

Containers placed in downtown businesses collect donations for a community Christmas tree. Dr J H Baxter said funds may be left at city hall or the Liberal office for larger gifts. Citizens urged to contribute pennies nickels and dimes to build a sizable fund.

Hunters Warned Not To Shoot Hogs In New Mexico Areas

Lordsburg and Hidalgo County residents warned against shooting hogs as domestic hogs in Hachita Animas and Cloverdale are killed. Victoria Lands and Cattle Company notes stock depletion and urges action, clarifying that only wild hogs there are javalinas protected by law.

Jeffus Attends Meeting of Game Protective Group

George P. Jeffus spoke at a Silver City gathering of the Silver City Game Protective Association last Friday night. The pro hunting and land group opposes new airports and roads in New Mexico wilderness, seeks to keep forest lands, and favors reclaiming streams closed to anglers. Jeffus noted stocked fish by New Mexico sportsmen on posted areas.

Lions Club hears report from Rice and plans box supper

The Lordsburg Lions Club met at the Woman's Club luncheon listening to part of the World Series broadcast. R B Rice third vice president reported on his committee duties. Next week's serving committee includes Woodrow Hitson T B Williams and Don Johnson. Box supper planned for October 24.

Paving Work Under Way in Lordsburg Streets

Actual paving of Lordsburg streets is expected to begin within two weeks. Main Shakespeare and Pyramid streets have 4 inch ballast nearly finished with Texas Street included. A two inch leveling course will precede the two inch oil mat, with final phase uncertain but due within two weeks. The contractor also has eight miles of asphalt mat to pour at Deming before starting here.

County Commissioners OK Bills at Hidalgo Court House

The Board of County Commissioners authorized payment of bills at its regular Hidalgo County meeting. Attendees included L. E. Wilkinson district 2 Robert Mortenson district 1 and clerk Rachel Atkinson. Commissioner R H Wamel district 3 was absent hospitalized in Lordsburg Hospital.

Swallows Reopen Broadway Cafe After Remodel

Vern and Pat Swallow reopened the Broadway Cafe on Tuesday after a full interior remodel. The couple has lived in the area since 1940 and previously ran the Dixie Cafe for two years with uninterrupted operation.

Kerr Heads FBI Group in Southwest Peace Officers

Vidalgo County Sheriff Roy Kerr of Lordsburg was named president of a new association of Federal Bureau of Investigation National Police Academy Graduates at an Albuquerque meeting. Earlier he was elected president of the New Mexico Sheriff's and Police Association at Las Cruces, succeeding Howell Gage. He ends his term as Vidalgo County sheriff and will be succeeded by Under Sheriff Oscar Allen who begins his 19th term.

Former Lordsburg Man Killed in Fort Knox Accident

Clyde Been formerly of Lordsburg died last Sunday in an automobile crash in Fort Knox Kentucky. Funeral services were held Thursday at 4 p.m. with Rev. Franklin Poage officiating. A male quartet sang and pallbearers included B M Fisher Jr and others. Been recently reenlisted in the army for three years and was the son of Mr and Mrs Leonard Been. He formerly served as city marshal and hotel manager in Lordsburg.

A three city pastel exhibition opens Sunday at the Women’s Club Building Lordsburg with a 3 p m reception. Curated by Mrs R E Buvens the show features Howard Cook Helmuth Naumer Albert H Schmidt and highlights the artists’ New Mexico landscapes and portraits in pastel oil and watercolor. Contract Approved for Veteran Flight Training School

Marshall Kuykendall has approval to run a veteran flight training program under the GI Bill. The government covers most costs except medical and light exams. Mrs Anita Cobb was honor guest. Mrs Forrest Sanders hosted a bridge luncheon Monday afternoon. Mr Cobb arrived from Marian Massachusetts to visit her parents Mr and Mrs Tom Clayton. She returned home Wednesday night. Mrs Cobb was guest of honor at a dinner Tuesday evening at Culberson Ranch home.
