Phelps Dodge Workers Seek Shorter Playas Smelter Route
About 15 Phelps Dodge Playas Smelter workers led by George Craig urged Hidalgo County officials to approve a shorter work route. They currently travel 110 miles daily from Lordsburg and propose extending Winery Road by 7 or 8 miles to meet Mini Farms Road then reach the smelter, a savings of roughly 40 miles per day.

Funeral services for Cruz H. Rodriguez 84 died October 6 at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home were held Thursday October 9 at Shakespeare Cemetery. Rosary was said Wednesday October 8 at 7 p.m. at Heather Funeral Home. A Lordsburg resident since 1925 he worked as a cook. Survived by wife Gregoria of Lordsburg five sons Dan Frank Joe Martin and Ruben all in California four daughters in California Dolores Morelos Ruth Durand Esperanza Rodriguez and Maria Elena Shaffer and three Lordsburg daughters Patricia Magallanes Lucy Dimas and Martha Rodriguez. Heather Funeral Home organized arrangements. Robert Martin Jr to be featured banquet speaker.

On Wednesday October 22 a public Drug Abuse Program will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Lordsburg High School Cafetorium. Sponsored by the Sheriff’s Department the event aims to raise awareness and prevent future drug abuse with speakers covering symptoms, drug types, law, school narcotics, and alcohol abuse.
