Police Chief Lalo Sanchez warns pedestrians to use clearly marked crosswalks on Ave to protect walkers. He says drivers should yield, and the walking public should be aware crosswalks are for pedestrian safety, clarifying misconceptions about driver stopping rules.
Lordsburg PTA hosts the District Conference on Monday May 3. The event runs from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with leaders from the National PTA in Chicago and state officers including Mrs Corn from Roswell.
Local countryside shakes as Navy test explosions occur on the Charles Fuller ranch north of town. First blast Tuesday night, another at 8 10 a m Wednesday, and more on Wednesday night. Reports say a ton of TNT is used at a time from the San Diego base. Experiments are to continue and move eastward across the country.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Posse sponsors a November 6 show at the fair grounds in Hidalgo featuring Gene Holter's Animal Actors. The troupe includes chimpanzees and a world’s smallest trained elephant, riding zebras, llamas, ostrich races with 15 locals, and other animals seen in Life magazine and films.
The Shakespeare Council of Girl Scouts of America opens the financial drive on Sunday October 26 marking Girl Scout Week through November 1. Uniforms and equipment will be displayed at Up To Date drygoods. A pot luck supper and Court of Awards will occur November 14 at the high school cafeteria for Brownies intermediates and seniors.
The Lordsburg PTA sponsors the Halloween Carnival at Central School gym on Friday night October 31. Enchilada supper, football game, and jitney dance headline the event with new amusement booths. Supper serves in home economics rooms at five o'clock. Continued on Page 5.
Big game season in New Mexico opens Saturday November 19 and runs through November 19. Mr Butler of the State Department of Game and Fish says there is no plan to close the area to deer hunters despite a slight deer decline due to flies. Grant county south of highway 260 to Catron county line will be closed to turkey hunting this season, while the area north of Silver City remains open to turkey hunting.
The Community Public Service Co. invited Lordsburg and Silver City Lions clubs to a barbecue Thursday night Oct. 16 at the power plant. Plant officials present included George Johnson division manager G W Sherwood merchandising manager Marvin Fuller all of Silver City A G Davis field auditor from Fort Worth Maurice Conner manager of the Silver City office and Donald Johnson manager of the Lordsburg office.
A Boy Scout Court of Honor was held Monday night October 20 in the high school auditorium during a PTA meeting. The event, led by Robert Barrett as Advancement chairman, awarded Second Class pins to Melvin Phillips Kenneth Bowers Carl Bailey and Keith Morris of Troop 120 and Allen Gordon Foy Gene Powell Ray Tenney of Troop 123. First Class honors went to James Baxter Denny Bryant Lynn Tyler of Troop 120 and Billy Barnes Larry Call Robert Harwood Lonne Nally Lloyd Payne Eugene Romney III of Troop 120. Merit Badges were presented by H Bryant including Wood Carving Pathfinding and Camping to Raymond Probert of Troop ???
The Lordsburg Lions Club has acquired the former Nazarene church at Seventh and Shakespeare, awaiting a clear title before sale completion. The club plans a community center with a teen-age canteen, financed by renting the building for social events to organizations and private parties.
A $1000 matched roping event headlines Sunday at the Sheriff's Posse Arena Hidalgo County Fairgrounds. Lefty Wilkens of Yeleta Texas faces Fred Darnell of Rodeo in the main event at 2 00 pm with ten calves per contestant. An overflow crowd is expected and jackpot roping is on the afternoon schedule.
Representatives for 12 local organizations and five Chamber of Commerce members met Monday evening in the Hotel Hidalgo lounge to determine the procedure for selecting a Sun Princess for the Sun Carnival in El Paso.
