Cattle Hauling Rates Contested Under New 1972 Law

Monticello council and New Cattle Growers Association report new livestock hauling rates effective April 8 under a 1972 law. Reps Clifton DeTucumeari and Ralph Pruit, among others, push rates up to 15 000 pounds with tiered charges for cattle, sheep and swine across multiple distance brackets. Separate scales and certificates required. Sundays liquor permits also noted in local option districts.

Education Week Observed With Open House Events

American Education Week runs October 24 to 30. Open houses are scheduled at Central School on October 27 and at South Side and Traylor Schools on October 28 from 7 30 to 8 30 p m. The event is guided by NEA and partners to bridge the gap between promise and performance in education.

Lordsburg Teachers Get Dismissals For Convention

J. C. Richmond president of the Lordsburg Education Association announces school will be dismissed on October 2 and 22 so teachers may attend the state convention of the National Education Association New Mexico in Albuquerque. The days are not paid holidays and do not count toward required teaching days.

Local Officer Graduates From State Police Academy

Lt. Edward L. Looker of the Lordsburg Police Department completed a 12 week program at the New Mexico State Police Academy in Santa Fe and earned a diploma. He also attended FBI seminars and held the high pistol score. Alderman Arturo Ruiz says police training is now required by state and city.

Funeral Services Held For Lewis Green

Funeral services for Lewis Henry Green were held in Heather Chapel at 10 am on Wednesday October 20. He died October 15 in the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque after illness. He was a World War II veteran and member of Knights of Pythias Pyramid Lodge 23, American Legion Robert Swan Post 30, and Masonic Lodge 30 of Lordsburg. Graveside rites followed at Mountain View Cemetery with Knights of Pythias pallbearers and honorary pallbearers from the lodge.

Lions Club Flags Hidden From Rain Veterans Day Ad

The Lordsburg Lions Club urges not to display flags if it rains on Monday Veterans Day. They also ask patrons to bring in flags if rain begins later in the day.

Lordsburg Mavericks Crush Duncan 62 14 in Big Friday Game

Lordsburg rolled to a 62 to 14 victory over Duncan on Friday. Gabe Guerrero started the scoring, Freddy Alvarado and David Johnson connected for a 65 yard pass, and Raymond Hernandez added a 30 yard score. The Mavericks dominated with multiple touchdowns, including a 70 yard punt fake by Gabe and a 40 yard interception return by Charlie Johnson.

Road blocks to be continued in city

Road blocks around the city to check drivers licenses brake and light stickers and faulty equipment will be continued. Chief of Police C C Gray says the joint effort of City and State Police is for safety. Sticker inspections available at Chays Service Station Lordsburg Garage and Body Shop Miller Chevrolet and Smith Ford Co. A meeting with service station operators is set for Saturday Oct 23 at 3 pm at City Hall to discuss dangers of purchasing items from motorists that may be stolen property subject to confiscation. Cooperation in reporting suspicious characters will be requested.

Absentee Voting Deadline Notice

A voter away November 2 can vote absentee at the Courthouse. A voting booth is set up and sample ballots are available at the County Clerk’s office. The last day to vote absentee is October 28. The County Clerk’s office will be open Saturday October 23 for absentee voters.

The county clerk will conduct schools of instruction for the special election on November 2, 1971. Sessions: Precinct 6 at the Animal School 10:00 A.M. October 27. Precinct 5 at the Rodeo School 2:30 P.M. October 27. Lordsburg Precincts 2, 2 and 3 at the Court House October 28 10:00 A.M. Two voting places in Lordsburg with Precincts 2 and 2 consolidated at Central Gym and Precinct 3 at the American Legion Hall. Virden Precinct 4 at the Virden School 2:00 P.M.

UNICEF Drive Aids Children Fund Raiser This Saturday

Youth from local churches will collect for UNICEF at a community drive on Saturday October 30 from 6 00 to 7 30 p m Meet at the Methodist Church at 5 45 p m for volunteer briefing and collection routes.
