Ground Observer Corps Organizing Progress Report

Training classes for Ground Observer members have been held at the Tucson Defense Filter Center. Seven posts are organized and ready for operation. Posts and officials are listed at Cot City Road Forks Pearl’s Rodeo Hermanas Animas Lordsburg with several supervisors and chiefs, though some posts are delayed by facilities and arrangements.

New Mexico Projects Record Low Traffic Fatality This Year

Mecker chief analyst for the Traffic Safety Commission predicts the state will post its lowest traffic fatality rate in history. He notes August had two deaths, with total fatalities 18 behind last year’s pace, as he observed calm speeds and fewer violations on a Santa Fe to Albuquerque trip. He cautions the improvement could end if conditions worsen.

PTA District Meet Set for Silver City

The PTA Association will hold a district meeting in Silver City on Friday October 21 at New Mexico Western College. Morning session begins 9 30 with coffee in the Teachers Lounge. business meeting at 10 in Light Hall. Four State Board members will lead a workshop in the afternoon and a Dutch lunch is planned at Murray Hotel.

Farm Day showcases crop research at New Mexico A and M College

About 300 farmers attended the annual Farm Day at Mesilla Park to view experimental plots and hear researchers. Talks highlighted alfalfa breeding against yellow clover aphid damage and seven new Upland cotton strains seeking improved blight resistance.

The Mavericks edged Tularosa 7 6 after a tight start as Oscar Diaz saw a 59 yard punt return ruled null. Ben Williams added a 10 yard TD and Tularosa countered with a 55 yard drive by their ace quarterback.

Lordsburg Mavericks Star Ray Camacho Snares Rare TD

Ray Camacho, 155 pound sophomore guard for the Lordsburg Mavericks, scored a 35 yard touchdown against Tularson, a feat said to fulfill coach Paul Probert’s ten season old promise of a steak dinner for the first tackle, guard, or center crossing the goal. Probert celebrated by taking Camacho to Ricoa’s Cafe and awarding the meal, with plans to repeat the bet if more players deliver similar plays.

Boy Scout Fund Drive To Start October 25

The Boy Scouts of Lordsburg will launch a fund drive on October 25 led by a governor headed steering group. The slogan Building Tomorrow's Better Citizens highlights the program and its aim to shape responsible future citizens. New Mexico reports show 15,117 affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America including 7,636 Cub Scouts and 5,671 Boy Scouts across 546 units.

Lordsburg Junior High Football Drops First Game 19–0

The Lordsburg eighth and ninth graders lost 19 to 0 to Silver City freshman team in Silver City on Monday October 10. Thirty players traveled, 31 on the squad, with standouts Freddie Ramirez Bobby Tibbs Danny Rendon and Caesar Flores. The team meets Deming away on Saturday October 22 at 2 30 p m and hosts Silver City November 1 followed by a Deming return November 10 at 2 30 p m.

Rifle Club Shoot Planned at West Town Range

On Sunday October 30 the Rifle Club will hold a shoot at the rifle range five miles west of town starting at 6 30. Members are urged to attend and prospective new members are welcome to join.
