Miss Mary Pollard Speaks at BPW Club Meeting

The Business and Professional Women's club hosted about 50 PTA members on Thursday October 13 at 6 30 PM in the high school lunch room. A dinner was served as in the weekday lunch hour followed by a program in the auditorium.

Man Killed Tuesday on Highway 70 in New Mexico

John F. Donavan, 50, a Los Angeles resident and retired Army officer, died after his car swerved and struck a McWay transport truck on Highway 70 near the city. His body was moved to Fort Bliss for burial after services. Mrs Donavan and family members were en route to Hidalgo County Hospital where his wife lies critically injured.

Lordsburg Boxing Club Plans October 27 Bout

The Lordsburg Boxing Club announces a near future event likely for Thursday October 27 at the Lordsburg fairgrounds behind the La P Fiesta Club. Seven bouts account for the evening’s card with local entrants Blacky Zamaripa Pug Nose Talavera Mike Gutierrez Martin Arambula and Mingo Galvan among competitors. Galvan will challenge Kid Trucha of Clifton.

Local Scouts Enter Grant County Merit Badge Show

Troop 123 sponsored by the Lordsburg Latter Day Sainting enters the Grant District Scout Merit Badge and Cub Hobby Show at the Murray Hotel in Silver City from 9:00 a m to 8:00 p m October 29. They compete in Indian Lore merit badge against 24 Scout Cub and Senior Scout units from Grant and Luna counties for prizes and ribbons.

Early frost harms cotton in Animas Valley survey notes

Animas valley cotton growers report about one third of the crop damaged by an unusually early frost on Monday night October 10. A 31 degree reading at Lordburg depot suggests lower temps in many spots as cool weather continues with a south gale and falling temperatures midweek.

Thelma Richins Guest Speaker At Lions Club

Thelma Richins spoke at the Lions Club luncheon at the Westerner cafe. She reported on the FHA Regional convention in Santa Barbara with 30 New Mexico delegates and about 500 U S and Hawaii participants. The next event is an inter-city meeting with the Dering club in Deming on Tuesday at 7 00 PM.

The Young Republican club held its annual meeting and election of officers on Tuesday. Manuel Marinez was chosen president with Juan Lopez as vice president Lola Hernandez secretary and Isabelle Alvarez treasurer. Dora Varela named judge and Mary Jane Martinez reporter.

Old Timers Hold Organizational Meet in Legion Hall

The Old Timers Association held its dinner and organizational meeting last Saturday at the Legion hall with 74 attendees. Registrations total 160, including 22 members who have lived in the state 50 years or more.

A Halloween Carnival King and Queen contest is under way with teams running within each class. Each vote costs one cent and is turned in to the teacher to be counted daily. The class contest closes at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday October 25th for final tally.
