Voters approve constitutional amendment 419 on highway reform

City Council Sets Special Election on Form of Government

In a special meeting the City Council voted to hold a December 9 election on adopting a commission manager form of government. Petitions filed October 5 prompted the move and the attorney’s opinion supported the date within legal limits. The council also called for bids on new reflective street signs and mounting posts.

Lordsburg To Host Fourteenth District Convention

Mrs. Ena Mitchell president of Lordsburg Woman's Club and Mrs. Wesley Freeburg district chair attended the Fourth District New Mexico Federation of Women's Clubs annual convention in Anthony October 10 11. Mitchell and Freeburg served as delegates. The theme was Youths Worth is Worthy Adults. They toured Juarez visiting a glass factory and attended the Flores De Otono banquet. Freeburg was elected district four treasurer for two years. Local club members contributed arts and crafts entries with Mrs. George Trimble winning first in crochet baby set and Mrs. Walter Dunagan placing third in oil painting. Lordsburg was invited to host the 46th district convention in October 1968.

Mrs Alberta Silvas Dies In Local Hospital

Mrs Alberta Trejo Silva born August 7 1693 in Zacate cas Mexico died October 16 1967 in Hidalgo General Hospital. Resident of Lordsburg over 30 years from El Paso where she lived about 20 years. Survivors include four sons Refugio Carillo Clement Carillo Mickey and Albert Silvas and four daughters Carmen Carrillo Augustina Ruybe Rosa Garcia and Lupe Jasso. Two brothers Antonio Trejo Pat Trejo two sisters Herminia Lopez Maria Trejo. 27 grandchildren 13 great grandchildren. Services held Memorial Chapel El Paso Tuesday 8 p.m. Requiem Mass Guardian Angel Church 10 a.m.

Mavericks Blank Duncan in Homecoming rout at Lordsburg

Lordsburg Mavericks defeated Duncan Wildkats 34 to 0 in a Homecoming game. Doyar May, Ruben Baisa and Paul Speer scored for Lordsburg, with strong defensive play including three interceptions by Buster Estrada and one by Ramon Valdiviero. The Mavericks visit Ruidosso next for their third conference game.

Damaged Redrock Bridge Destroyed By Fire

The Redrock bridge, weakened by Gila River floods, burned completely on Tuesday night leaving families north of the river cut off. Arson suspected as residents rely on wading across the river while the Game and Fish Dept preserve and the state park site face isolation. Bridge lines damaged. engineers urged a new bridge costing about 40 000 as state or federal aid is not anticipated.

Schools and large power users win CPS rate cut

Community Public Service Company in New Mexico gains rate reductions approved by the Public Service Commission effective September 29. School service rates for all New Mexico schools drop about 11.6 percent annually, while eight large power customers with annual purchases from 800000 to nearly 9 million kWh will see about a 5.11 percent average annual power bill reduction.

Murder Charge Filed Against Virden Man

Billie D Brooks 33 of Virden is charged with first degree murder in the death of his wife Evelyn 32. Evelyn Brooks was found dead in bed by their son Jerald 15 after an autopsy showed a fatal blow to the back of the head. Brooks surrendered to the under sheriff and is jailed awaiting a preliminary hearing scheduled for Friday October 27 at 2 pm.
