Reed Appointed Fire Chief Amid City Turmoil

Loyd G. Reed was named fire chief by the city council after a tense regular meeting. Mayor Alan Koff criticized the preexisting bad department rating and called for reform while Council discussed whether Judge Albert Stevens should resign. Stevens refused to resign, and Alderman R. Dockum Buys Dewey Jones Cafe Changes Planned

The Dewey Jones Coffee Shop is sold to R S S Dockum and will close while equipment is moved to a new restaurant on the Hut Cafe site. The Hut Quonset building will become a warehouse. the Dewey Jones building remains owned by Blas Noce. The cafe had served since 1935 and was listed by Duncan Hines. The Jones family offered thanks to patrons.

Animas School Carnival Set for October 14 at Animas High

The annual Animas School Carnival will be held Saturday October 14 starting at 6 30 p m at Animas High School Gym. Proceeds fund school expenses with concessions dart throwing basketball teams bingo a food booth student club night club acts and a Western dance with Meredith Neal and his Boothill Boys from Silver City performing 10 p m to around 1 a m.
