Hidalgo County Meeting Rejects Land Swap Plan by Phelp Dodge

Hidalgo ranchers packed the October County Commission meeting with over 56 votes opposing the Phelp Dodge Development Corporation proposal to swap 300000 acres of Hidalgo land for the Indian School property in Phoenix. Opponents warned of tax losses and state impact while federal land holdings alarm cattle groups and hunters. The commission plans a follow up meeting October 27 at Animas Community Center and invites public written comments to Hidalgo County Manager and New Mexico delegation.

Nomination Deadline Nearing for Citizen of the Year

The Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce says Friday is the cutoff to nominate a Citizen of the Year. Nominations must be mailed to Citizen of the Year c/o Chamber of Commerce P. O. Box 699 Lordsburg NM 88045 and postmarked by Friday October 16 1987.

Farm Bureau To Meet Saturday At Animas

The Hidalgo County Farm and Livestock Bureau will meet Saturday October 17 in the Animas School Cafeteria. Proceedings start at 3 00 P M with a barbecue dinner to follow. William McElhaney state president will be featured speaker. A Disney movie will be shown for children and door prizes will be given. All bureau members urged to attend.

Police Chief Reports To Council

Police Chief Ed Cramer reported a successful quarter to the Lordsburg City Council. Officers responded to 309 calls requiring reports, issued 246 traffic and non-traffic citations including 16 DWI. Animal control handled 170 calls. Training in PR24 baton use is complete and officers are certified.

Compliance A Must With Immigration Act

On June 1 1987 the provision of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 was implemented. Every employer must verify that persons hired after November 6 1986 are not unauthorized aliens. The law requires Form I-9 completion and document verification. Citizens must provide documents and a receipt if awaiting them. Lordsburg will require Form I-9 for all hires with listed identity documents.

County rivals clash as Friday game draws Sheriff eyes

Sheriff Lloyd Payne warns Hidalgo County fans to follow driving and safety rules for the Lordsburg versus Animas game at 7 30 PM Friday. State Police will patrol roads and the game site, with alcohol banned on school property and officers watching for liquor violations and misconduct. Deputies McDonald and Darnell investigated a burned bulldozer at Don Still’s mill after a 6 PM call on September 27, tracing tire tracks to a car in Lordsburg. four juveniles detained after they said they were rabbit hunting and thirsty.

Skeen Appoints McPherson to Academy Board

Horace McPherson of Lordsburg is named by U.S. Representative Joe Skeen to the Nomination Board to review service academy applications. The team meets November 14 at New Mexico State University to assess on file applications. contact McPherson at 542-3232 for information. Chickering Concert Piano Returns Home to Lordsburg

A decades old Lordsburg High School piano, purchased in 1929 by the PTA and later sold in 1974, was found for sale in Deming. A local drive raised funds to repurchase it, reaching about $2,000 by July and over $700 in September, enough to pay the remaining balance. The piano is now on the Central gym stage and used in music classes.

Maverick Homecoming Parade Invites Community Participation

Lordsburg High School invites community members to join the Maverick Homecoming Parade on Friday October 23 at 3 PM lining up in the school parking lot. Entries must submit an entry blank by Tuesday October 20 at the high school office.
