Computers Arrive At Animas School

Animas High School began the term with a new computer program delayed but then put into service on October 4. Nineteen Apple machines were installed in the computer room with three more in the library. Peggy Larsch notes 100 students in the course. two-student per computer classes and one-on-one setups elsewhere. Principal Tom Abbott highlights four programming languages and future elective aims, while educators emphasize computers as engaging, preparatory tools for the outside world and future job markets.

Flood Report Discussed By Commissioners

County Commissioners reviewed a Santa Fe report claiming Hidalgo County suffered extensive rains damage. Road Superintendent McCarty will meet with state officials from several counties on rains impact. Authorities discussed Virden bridge potential damage and awaited state verdict on any needed funds.

Chavez Seeks CDBG Funds for Lordsburg Rehab Project

City Council held a special session October 6 to discuss Resolution No. 310 authorizing City Engineer David Chavez to pursue a 1984 fiscal year CDBG grant of 500000 for north Lordsburg home rehabilitation. A second measure, Resolution No. 311, creates a State Highway co op to fund street resurfacing and paving, with three priority groups and local share split.

Derby Soap Box Derby Opens With Clear Skies and Crowds

Trepidation gave way to perfect weather as Heidi Anderson and Mary Ann Camacho approved the annual Soap Box Derby events. Angel Ramirez won first in the Adult Division for Borden's and Rainbow's entry, with Bill Collins second in Freeway Chevron and Brian Thomas third for Silver City Youth Center. Randy Estrada and Eli Collins excelled in classic car entries. The Lion's Club Barbeque fueled spectators, while 2:00 p.m. races on a 25 to 37 mph hill thrilled crowds as Collins led with a 94.3 second total. Dockum Distributing and Lordsburg represented for second and third in the adult division. Page 4 continues.

Local Businessmen Hear County Manager Update

Nine businessmen attended the October 6 luncheon at Jim's American Restaurant where County Manager Tommy Andersson updated on the Hidalgo County Hospital project. He said a group had traveled to Santa Fe to seek a Community Development Block Grant to repurpose the hospital for Health and Environmental Agency use and a planned Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Center, with the remaining space to be rented to private enterprise.
