Hyrum Pace of Virden Dies at 90 in Silver City

Virden resident Hyrum Martin Pace died at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City at age 90. Services were October 10 in Duncan with full military honors by Swift Murphy Post 32 and burial in Virden Cemetery. Pace, born March 12, 1900 in Thatcher, Arizona, lived in Virden most of his life, served in WWI, on LDS missions, and as a longtime county commissioner. survived by 3 sons, 3 daughters, 2 sisters, 31 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. Caldwell Funeral of Safford handled arrangements. Also noted: Hidalgo County Advisory Council election Friday October 12 at 9 am–3 pm. Lordsburg-Hidalgo Museum Board meeting October 15 at 3 pm in City Council Chamber.

Citizens Discuss Uses for Enrichment Center at Civic Center

A group of interested residents met Saturday at the Civic Center to discuss options for repurposing the Enrichment Center, the former high school, and to form a steering committee to explore possible uses led by Pansy.

Lordsburg Debates Legalized Gambling At Public Forum

A October 3 public forum in Lordsburg drew about 40 residents to discuss legalized gambling. Supporters said gambling could create jobs while opponents asked for specifics on types and impact. A citizen committee was formed to gather opinions and oversee renovation plans for the Enrichment Center with a $1000 asbestos assessment discussed.

Bruce King Campaign Visit to Lordsburg Saturday Morning

Bruce King the Democrat candidate for Governor will be in Lordsburg Saturday morning for a brief visit. A no host breakfast at Rico's Restaurant will host the former Governor his wife Alice and Lt. Governor hopeful Casey Luna from 7:30 to 9:30 AM. The group will depart Lordsburg at 10:30 AM with attendees urged to meet at Rico's. breakfast optional.

Lordsburg City Council authorizes Mayor Diaz to contact a consulting engineer as an early step in the city paving grant bond plan. North Street paving is discussed with funding deadlines set for November 1990 through 1992, and the urgency to use funds for street repairs emphasized by Molly Orona.

Justin Kipp of the Kipp Cattle Co requests the commission place a fence to block unauthorized traffic on Playas road. Noce says highway department inquiries have not yielded replies and the panel will meet with highway attorneys to discuss the road issue.

Jose L. Montoya, 73, Lordsburg resident, died Monday October 8 at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City. Visitation was Wednesday at 5:00 PM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, rosary at 7:00. Funeral Mass Thursday at 10:00 at St. Joseph's, Order of the Augustinian Recollects officiating. Interment at Shakespeare Cemetery. Pallbearers: Angel Lopez, Manuel Lopez, Joey Ruiz, Oscar Barrio, Nuco Artiaga, Lupito Lopez. Born August 3, 1917 in Pinos Altos, he was a miner, lifelong Lordsburg resident, Army veteran, survived by 3 stepdaughters Socorro Vargas, Lupe Madero, Moni Talavera. brother Manuel Montoya. 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife Ramona L Montoya April 14, 1990. Baca's Heather Funeral Chapels in charge.

Hunter Safety Course Opens October 22 in Hidalgo County

A comprehensive hunter education course runs Monday October 22 through Friday October 26 at 4 00 PM in the Hidalgo County Courthouse Extension Office. Charlie Siepel and Rodney Plowman lead instruction on rifle shotgun bow handling safety wildlife management field survival and more. Animas Board Considers Cafeteria Count Down

At a regular meeting the Animas Board of Education noted a sharp drop in cafeteria counts from last year. Members and attendees discussed fixes including menu revisions and a longer lunch period. Five minutes were added to lunch and the day. Principal reports covered October events such as parent teacher conferences and homecoming. Board president honored Ruben Maest for ten years of service. Next meeting set for November 13.
